Overview
A Project Construction Manager at Microsoft will help build the network that powers the world’s largest online services. Responsibilities
- Budget and Controls: Monitor the approved project budget, provide oversight, and suggest adjustments for project controls (e.g., Project Expenditure Requests, Professional Services Requests, Change Orders, Pay Applications).
- Change Management: Partner with Internal Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) and other key stakeholders (e.g., Commercial Software Engineering, Real Estate & Facilities) to share updated process flow information with the project team, ensuring new processes are followed to increase cost savings, improve cycle-time, and enhance efficiencies.
- Coordination: Attend and advise during scheduled owner/architect/contractor and other project meetings.
- Drives Results: Facilitate metro-based or campus projects (new construction and/or retrofits) by making timely data-based decisions with the local project team and stakeholders. Champion goals, follow business processes, engage vendors when applicable, and foster cross-group collaboration aligned to program milestones.
- Financial Acumen: Create and apply best practices to identify cost-effective solutions for delivery of a construction project. Influence, strategize, and drive decisions with clients, sponsors, and vendors.
- Goal Alignment: Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Engineering, Operations, Legal, Project Controls) and general contractors/subcontractors to maintain the corporate vision and project goals.
- Managing Resources: Oversee procurement activities for staffing and materials, ensuring timely delivery within budget forecasts. Evaluate resources to ensure adequate staffing and materials.
- Project Management: Drive campus-based delivery solutions (new or retrofit data center facilities). Analyze technical information, provide recommendations, establish team goals, assign responsibilities, measure performance, and solicit feedback to achieve timely results.
- Project Tracking: Assist in creating and reporting project progress regarding scope, schedule, standards, and budget.
- Risk Mitigation: Communicate risk mitigation goals and develop metrics, dashboards, or scorecards to track, communicate, and drive progress. Suggest actions to support safety and organizational goals.
- Safety and Regulation: Represent Microsoft as a safety leader on Campus/Metro construction programs, ensuring adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA). Conduct routine safety audits and participate in incident investigations.
- Technical Acumen: Review engineering documentation and site/building plans, identify risks or gaps, and recommend mitigations to improve constructability. Align delivery with procedures and organizational standards.
- Vendor Management: Advise and monitor vendor/contractor performance, ensure contract compliance, review cash flow and budget reports with the cost management team, and present findings to delivery and executive teams.
- Vendor Selection: Review and approve vendor scope of work, site/building plan reviews, pay-application, and invoices.
Requirements
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Project Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field, and 10+ years of related experience, or equivalent experience.
- Other: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check on hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Project Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field, and 12+ years of related experience, or equivalent experience. Additionally, 12+ years of experience working on data center projects.
