Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Film and New Media department at Wheaton College is seeking applicants for a Professor of the Practice of Digital Media and Communications (DMC), starting in Fall 2027. The successful candidate will provide a vision for the future of the DMC major and shape it by designing and teaching foundational courses, as well as higher level courses in their area of expertise. Candidates in fields related to digital media and communications, such as emerging media, game studies, journalism, and data visualization are welcome to apply.
Professors of Practice are full-time teaching faculty with expertise and achievements in a particular field of instruction. In the future, this position may require leadership responsibilities to grow and manage the Digital Media and Communications major. The position may also require contributions to Wheaton’s 4+1 in Creative Industries Masters Program.
Wheaton’s Film, Media, and Communications department consists of five full-time, student-centered faculty with expertise as scholars and practitioners. It is committed to creating an innovative, inclusive learning environment with the goal to develop students’ understanding of the digital media landscape and build mastery of the communication skills and tools necessary to thrive in its related industries. The position may be renewed annually.
Responsibilities
- The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate courses that support the Digital Media and Communications major. The teaching load for this position is three courses per semester, with the possibility of substituting advising and administrative responsibilities for one course. The courses may include Intro to Digital Media and Communications and Communication and Cultural Diversity. Professors of Practice are expected to serve the college and their department after their first year. Professors of Practice receive initial one-year contracts, become eligible for a two-year contract after their second year, and can seek promotion to Senior Professor of Practice and ongoing three-year contracts after their fourth year. Professors of Practice receive funding to support conference attendance and professional development.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An MA with strong teaching or professional experience, MFA, or PHD degree is required at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidates will have the ability to design and teach both introductory courses, such as Intro to Digital Media and Communication and Communication and Cultural Diversity. Additional course offerings may be possible based on the candidate’s area of expertise and interest.

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The anticipated hiring or recruitment range for this position is $55K. The actual salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications, education and experience of the candidate hired.
