About this role

Microsoft’s CoreAI organization builds the end-to-end AI stack and powers Azure AI innovation and differentiation across Microsoft’s flagship products, including GitHub, Office, Teams, and Xbox. The Foundry team enables builders of all skill levels to create AI apps. The Responsible AI group focuses on identifying, measuring, mitigating, and monitoring Responsible AI risks in AI-generated and human-generated content across text, image, audio, video, and multimodal content. We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer - Responsible AI who is passionate about building customer-facing AI services with scalable, sustainable architecture and high performance, low latency, and high availability. You will design new AI services and integrate them with existing services such as Azure AI Content Safety, Azure OpenAI Service, and Azure ML, among others. The role is based in California, United States, with Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization to achieve more. Responsibilities

  • Design and develop large-scale distributed cloud services with a focus on high availability, scalability, robustness, and observability.
  • Lead project development across the organization, collaborating with subject matter experts and stakeholders to drive development and release plans.
  • Evaluate alternative architectures and technologies to meet business requirements and service KPIs.
  • Assume end-to-end responsibility for the development lifecycle and production readiness of the services you build, and promote a strong DevOps culture within the team.
  • Promote best practices in modern software engineering through code and design reviews and data-driven service decisions based on telemetry.
  • Understand Microsoft businesses and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver cohesive, end-to-end experiences for customers.
  • Embrace a growth mindset, stay current with state-of-the-art technologies, and continually improve customer experience and business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check conducted at hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • 6+ years of technical engineering experience designing and delivering highly available, large-scale cloud services and distributed systems (preferred).
  • 4+ years of technical engineering experience with machine learning model development, release, and operations (preferred).
  • Ability to navigate the company and influence and inspire peers in engineering and broad product development.
  • Deep knowledge of software architecture, design tradeoffs, and mature DevOps practices.
  • Track record of delivering innovative insights that translate into value generation.
