About this role

About the Role

Atlassian's Agentic Retrieval team powers the search and retrieval behind Rovo Search, Chat and Agent, and Atlassian's AI products. You will help architect and scale the AI agents facing platform, evolving from a vector/semantic search platform to a full hybrid search capability and ultimately Atlassian’s agentic retrieval layer. You’ll own the technical direction to deliver high-quality results, low latency, high reliability, and cost efficiency at enterprise scale across Confluence, Jira, Trello, and beyond.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and scale the AI agents facing platform; lead the evolution from vector/semantic search to hybrid search and the agentic retrieval layer.

  • Own the technical direction to ensure high-quality results, low latency, high reliability, and cost efficiency at enterprise scale.

  • Deliver search and retrieval capabilities across Atlassian products (Confluence, Jira, Trello, and beyond) and enable AI agents.

  • Design and implement dynamic query planning using graph-based orchestration rather than static, linear pipelines.

  • Build and operate production-grade GenAI systems (LLM-powered apps, agents) with hands-on involvement and leadership.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain scalable, reliable architecture.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the team.

  • What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years of experience as a software developer.

  • Deep experience building and operating production search, ads, or recommendation systems at scale with real traffic.

  • Hands-on experience building GenAI systems — shipping agents, LLM-powered applications, or AI systems at scale.

  • Expertise in hybrid search — building indexes that combine vector/semantic and full-text/lexical retrieval.

  • Experience with scaling and deploying Machine Learning models.

  • Nice to Have

  • Expert-level with search platforms and deep learning training/inference platforms.

  • Experience with at least one major vector database (Pinecone, Milvus, Qdrant, Turbopuffer, etc).

  • Experience with graph-based orchestration or related scalable systems.

  • Compensation & Benefits

  • Base pay ranges for new hires in the United States (zone-based):

  • Zone A: $232,200 - $303,150

  • Zone B: $209,700 - $273,775

  • Zone C: $193,500 - $252,625

  • This role may be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity.

  • Atlassian offers a wide range of perks and benefits (health and wellbeing resources, paid volunteer days, and more).
