About the Role

Principal Engineer P&C will be responsible for electric system protection technology platforms, supervising and performing work in energized substations while maintaining the reliability of protective control systems in New York, including standards, design, training, and communication. The role oversees the project portfolio within their assigned Unit, ensuring adherence to regulations, company standards, and consistency across projects. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Principal Engineer collaborates with cross-functional project teams and supports project needs as directed by the Project Manager and Unit Manager. Expertise in control and protection schematics, single-line diagrams, and knowledge of national and international standards related to power system protection are essential.

What You'll Do

• Project detailed engineering, designs and calculations across all project phases such as scoping, budgeting, conceptual engineering, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
• Maintain and understand drawings (schematics, one-line diagrams, etc.).
• Develop and specify equipment; assemble documents for projects using breadth of discipline knowledge.
• Ensure engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
• Oversee engineering studies to evaluate protection system performance and reliability; analyze operational issues for efficiency.
• Develop and validate information needed for engineering analyses; apply engineering judgment to solve complex technical problems.
• Collaborate across departments; work independently though supervision may be required.
• Lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group.
• Mentor, develop and support the team in technical skills; liaise with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices.
• Demonstrate SME leadership; drive adoption of new technologies across operating companies and international affiliates.
• Perform complex protection coordination analyses and contribute to project management efforts.

• Practical engineering experience including field work, construction, and economic analyses; ability to develop business cases.
• Engineering documentation skills and ability to review and approve work to ensure compliance.
• Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory standards and requirements.
• Substations Protection and Control design knowledge is essential.
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards at company, local, state and national levels.
• Knowledge of construction in utility environments.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience.
• Expert knowledge of power system protection and international standards.

• Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to drive change across affiliates.
• Experience in protection coordination analysis and project management; awareness of commercial implications (cost estimating, budgeting).
• Safety leadership and broad knowledge of power engineering theory, design, testing, commissioning, and analysis.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary range: $128,000 – $160,000 per year, plus up to 16% bonus, dependent on experience and location.
