Job title: Principal Applied Scientist
About the Role The Principal Applied Scientist will own the science mission for building next-generation proactive and autonomous agentic experiences across Alexa AI's Personalization, Autonomy and Proactive Intelligence organization. You will technically lead a team of applied scientists to harness state-of-the-art technologies in machine learning, natural language processing, LLM training and application, and agentic AI systems to advance the scientific frontiers of autonomous intelligence and proactive user assistance.
What You'll Do
- Lead complex research and development programs in agentic AI, autonomous reasoning, and multi-agent systems, translating research into production-ready systems
- Partner closely with the T&C Product and Engineering leaders on technical strategy and roadmap; evaluate emerging technologies and methodologies; make high-level architectural decisions
- Mentor and develop technical talent; set team goals and metrics; help with resource allocation and project prioritization
- Drive innovation in applied science areas; translate research into practical business solutions; publish technical papers and patents; collaborate with academia and industry partners
What We're Looking For
- MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in natural language processing, machine learning, recommendation, search, multimodal AI, or related field
- Proven track record of leading and managing science and engineering teams in building complex, real-time AI/ML/NLP systems with successful delivery to customers
- Demonstrated ability to deliver large cross-functional projects from requirements gathering and design to product launch, customer validation and scaling
- Exceptional customer relationship skills including the ability to discover true requirements and lead combined science and engineering efforts to meet timelines with optimal solutions
Nice to Have
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in recommendations, search, NLP, ML, deep learning, Generative AI, Agentic AI or related field
- Demonstrated ability to push the envelope in at least one machine learning domain (e.g., deep learning, NLP, reinforcement learning)
- Expertise in large language models or demonstrated ability to develop this expertise quickly
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication
