Job title: Pre-Apprentice Power Line Technician (PLT)

About the Role The Pre-Apprentice Power Line Technician (PLT) program is a one-year, temporary opportunity to explore the Power Line Technician trade and develop foundational line skills to become eligible for an apprenticeship.

What You'll Do

  • Learn to complete work assignments as a Level 1 Apprentice PLT and perform work up to 120/240 V single phase after ITA Level 1 Apprentice PLT Technical Training.
  • Act as a driver/ground person and may operate a Line Truck (single or dual axle) during construction, maintenance, and operations of the distribution system.
  • Climb and assist in the installation and removal of poles/anchors and transformers.
  • Work with the tradesperson crew or Journeyman/woman, handling and transporting equipment and materials as required.
  • Be qualified to drive and operate a motor car, truck, truck winch or other similar truck equipment.
  • Develop basic climbing skills, safety procedures, tool/material use, and bucket truck operation.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions at heights of 30–400 feet.
  • A Pre-Apprentice PLT will not be called upon to come into direct contact with high voltage equipment or conductors that are potentially live.

What We're Looking For

  • A high school graduate with English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11 or the equivalent.
  • BC Class 5 driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement (Class 3 Manual Transmission preferred).
  • Enjoy hands-on, physical outdoor work and have the fitness and upper body strength to do this.
  • Normal colour vision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal with internal and external customers.
  • Mechanical aptitude such as construction experience, mechanics or exposure to trades.
  • Equivalence documentation and transcripts: ability to demonstrate equivalent status with documentation from education providers; after selection, provide transcripts showing high school graduation including Math 11, English 12 and Physics 11, as well as a driver's abstract and claims history.

Where You Train and Work

  • As a Pre-Apprentice PLT, you may be asked to move anywhere in the province. Locations may include Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Southern Interior, and Northern B.C. (e.g., Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Prince George, Chetwynd, Mackenzie, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, Vanderhoof, Burns Lake, Terrace, Hazelton, Smithers, Dease Lake, Kitimat, Masset, and Prince Rupert).

Compensation & Benefits

  • As an apprentice, you earn 75% of the full journeyperson trade rate while you learn, with further increases during the apprenticeship.
