About this role

Job title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Time Domain Astrophysics

About the Role Villanova University's Department of Physics invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in time-domain and high-energy astrophysics to study transient and variable phenomena, with a focus on accreting compact sources (e.g., XRBs, AGN) in preparation for Rubin LSST. The successful candidate will work with new and archival optical and X-ray data and may mentor undergraduate researchers in a collaborative environment.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct research in time-domain and high-energy astrophysics, focusing on transient/variable phenomena and accreting compact sources (XRBs, AGN), in preparation for Rubin LSST.
  • Analyze data from optical ground-based facilities (e.g., ZTF) and satellites (e.g., TESS), with potential X-ray data integration.
  • Apply complexity analysis/nonlinear dynamics and machine learning techniques to characterize variability; develop methods and contribute to publications and conference presentations.
  • Collaborate with Prof. Becka Phillipson and mentor undergraduate students in research and career development.
  • Contribute to the teaching and research culture of the Villanova Physics Department.

What We're Looking For

  • PhD in Astronomy/Astrophysics or closely related field by start date (Fall 2025).
  • Strong background in time-domain astrophysics and variability analysis; experience with ZTF, TESS, and, ideally, X-ray observations.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistics, and machine learning; familiarity with complexity analysis/nonlinear dynamics is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and mentor undergraduate researchers.
  • A record of research productivity (publications, talks) and potential for continued scholarly contribution.

Nice to Have

  • Theoretical expertise in compact object variability or time-domain methodologies beyond the above.
  • Experience with Rubin Observatory LSST projects or data; strong programming skills and software development experience.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary not specified; standard benefits not specified.
