What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to join a collaborative research team developing new mathematical and computational methods for the efficient and robust solution of coupled multiphysics and multiscale problems. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of surrogate-accelerated interface transfer operators for coupling heterogeneous numerical methods, with applications to extreme-scale scientific computing, digital engineering, and DOE mission-relevant simulation capabilities.

This position is ideal for a candidate with a strong background in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, dynamical systems, or systems and control. The work will focus on stable and efficient algorithms for coupled time-dependent simulations, including partitioned and hybrid-monolithic coupling methods, interface operators, reduced-order models, stability and passivity analysis, and preconditioning for coupled PDE-based dynamical systems. Surrogate modeling and data-informed operator approximation may be used as tools, but the primary emphasis is on evaluating, improving, and guaranteeing numerical stability of coupling operators for use in fully-coupled multiphysics simulations.

On any given day, you may:

Develop, analyze, and implement numerical algorithms for coupled multiphysics and multiscale PDE systems

Investigate stability, robustness, accuracy, and conservation properties of coupled time-dependent simulations

Design methods for stabilizing coupled dynamical systems using tools from numerical analysis, systems theory, passivity, energy methods, or control

Develop interface transfer operators, Schur complement approximations, flux maps, or related coupling operators

Implement finite element-based computational test problems using Python, C++, and modern research software practices

Collaborate with applied mathematicians, computational scientists, software developers, and domain experts to publish results and develop open-source software

This position is onsite and based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Qualifications We Require:

You have, or are pursuing, a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Computational Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related science or engineering field; PhD must be conferred within three years prior to employment

Experience with numerical methods for partial differential equations, dynamical systems, scientific computing, computational mathematics, or systems and control

Record of research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals, competitive conference proceedings, technical reports, or high-impact research deliverables

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

Strong mathematical background in numerical analysis, PDEs, dynamical systems, systems and control, optimization, scientific computing, or computational mechanics

Experience developing or analyzing numerical methods for time-dependent PDEs, coupled multiphysics systems, or multiscale simulations

Experience with stability analysis, passivity, energy methods, control-inspired stabilization, amplification-matrix analysis, or preconditioning for dynamical systems

Familiarity with finite element methods, domain decomposition, Lagrange multiplier methods, Schur complements, saddle-point systems, or interface/Poincaré¿Steklov operators

Experience or interest in reduced-order modeling, surrogate modeling, operator approximation, dynamic mode decomposition, Koopman methods, or scientific machine learning

Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++, including use of Git, testing, documentation, and continuous integration; experience with HPC, MPI, Kokkos, Trilinos, or scalable scientific software is beneficial

About Our Team:

One of the country's largest research facilities, Sandia employs almost 17,000 people in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Livermore, California, in an exciting and highly collaborative multidisciplinary work environment. Our mission areas include nuclear weapons, energy, nonproliferation, defense, infrastructure, homeland security, counterterrorism, cybersecurity. We provide technical leadership for the nation in scientific simulation, high-performance computing, scientific machine learning and extreme-scale data analysis. Our state-of-the-art parallel-computing environment includes numerous large-scale clusters and other specialized computing systems.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
