The North Alabama Area Labor Council (NAALC) is seeking a Policy & Research Intern to support our Campaign Director for a healthcare organizing campaign.

The ideal candidate will be a curious people-person, looking to collaboratively build knowledge about North Alabama’s healthcare systems. They will have some experience in healthcare policy analysis, power mapping, or strategic corporate research.

The North Alabama Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO is a democratically elected body of union members that represent the interests of working people at the state and local level across seven counties in North Alabama.

What You’ll Do

The Research & Policy Intern, who is based in North Alabama and reports to the Campaign Director, is responsible for the following:

  • Supporting the Campaign Director’s research and policy efforts including power mapping and strategic corporate research

  • Managing a group of community-based researchers

  • Convene monthly and facilitate meetings

  • Maintain regular communication with members

  • Communicating with healthcare policy experts

  • Identifying potential policy recommendations

To be successful in this job, you will excel in four areas:

  • Interpersonal communication and relationship building: The ideal candidate for this role is outgoing and skilled at direct communication

  • Curiosity: This type of campaign is new to our organization and North Alabama in general. The person in this role should be ready to ask thoughtful questions as well as figure out how to find answers on their own.

  • Commitment to working class solidarity: You recognize that most everyone is working class, and deserves dignity and transparency from our political and healthcare systems.

  • Prior experience in labor organizing is a plus, but are not a requirement.

If you were here right now, you would be:

  • Reading a report about Medicaid abuse, and identifying potential resolutions

  • Following up with research group members to ensure they’ve completed the tasks they volunteered for

  • Researching healthcare systems in North Alabama

  • This role does not require an advanced degree, and we are open to someone who meets many but not all the requirements as long as the candidate can demonstrate curiosity and willingness to learn new information.

  • What Else You Should Know

  • The NAALC will be operating under the fiscal sponsorship of Alabama Arise, which is responsible for administrative tasks including payroll.

  • The position is part-time and temporary through April 2027. It is based in any county in North Alabama, but a significant amount of work will likely be focused in Huntsville. The compensation for this position is $15-$20/hr for no more than 15 hours per week from November through April 2027.
