About the Role Join the CSU Police Department at Cleveland State University, a fully certified law enforcement agency focused on community policing to keep a safe campus and support academic success. This role contributes to campus safety through patrols, education, outreach, and strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.
What You'll Do
- Proactive patrols, safety education, outreach programs, and problem-solving partnerships to maintain a secure campus environment.
- Respond to incidents, enforce laws and university policies, and coordinate with campus stakeholders.
- Utilize de-escalation, crisis intervention, and mental health response skills to ensure a compassionate and responsive approach to campus safety.
- Engage in professional development with opportunities for assignments in the Detective Bureau, K-9 unit, Therapy dogs, Community Engagement Unit, and more.
- Work rotating shifts and be prepared to report during emergencies, inclement weather, or other disruptions as essential personnel.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent; must be 21 years of age or older and eligible for license to carry a firearm.
- Must have current OPOTA Peace Officer certification or prior OPOTA certification with the ability to refresh within one year of hire (or prior to hire).
- Must periodically qualify in use of firearms and hold a valid driver’s license with driver eligibility under the University Motor Vehicle Policy.
- Must pass written exam, physical abilities test, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test, thorough background check, and panel interview.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts.
- For Lateral Transfers: current OPOTA Certification; two years experience and current appointment as a sworn officer (full-time or part-time 20 hours/week); no discipline in the past two years.
Nice to Have
- Training and experience in de-escalation, mental health response, cultural competency, and crisis intervention (as emphasized by CSU PD).
