Assists in the day-to-day operations of the Investigational Drug Service (IDS). Responsibilities include proper receipt, storing, handling, dispensing of investigational drugs, and maintaining drug accountability, inventory/expiration records.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assist the IDS Pharmacists in the daily activities of managing the services including study startup, closeout, and record keeping/archiving of pharmacy records.
• Assure proper handling and storage of investigational drugs as maintained in accordance with hospital policy, The Joint Commission, state, and federal standards specifically: Responsible for tracking, receiving, processing of all shipments of investigational agents/ancillary supplies.
• Maintain accurate drug receipts, accountability, dispensing, returns and disposition records of all investigational drugs.
• Record, maintain and archive temperature monitoring records. Recognize appropriate drug storage conditions. Generate electronic temperature reports using temperature monitoring software. Assist in managing temperature excursions.
• Assist in equipment maintenance (for example but not limited to temperature monitors, refrigerators, freezers, analytical balances) and record keeping.
• Compile study visit schedule to prioritize workflow and plan for dispensing activities.
• Maintain proficiency in utilizing productivity software, accessing electronic health records, study specific applications, Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS), UIC Research and IDS Management System.
• Participate in site visits. Perform tasks such as gathering pharmacy documents/records.
• Assists the Pharmacist, Pharmacy Manager, Associate/Assistant Director in the supervision of Pharmacy Technicians and Externs.
• Assists in monitoring and evaluating tasks performed by Students and Externs.
• Provides feedback for annual evaluations.
• Participates in identifying needs, establishing hiring criteria, and assessing candidates.
• Participates in training staff and students.
• Assists with the training of research teams members, other healthcare professionals such as Nurses and Medical Staff.
• Assesses workflow, priorities, and assignments for Students and Externs.
• Compiles statistical data related to the operation of the department.
• Ensures all records, reports, and study subject/patient profiles are accurately maintained.
• Preparation of medication orders for unit dose, sterile and non-sterile compounding.
• Select the correct investigational product or medical supply from appropriate inventory based on a drug order.
• Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile products using aseptic techniques.
• Compound and reconstitute drug products on a timely basis, and document all the necessary information for their preparation.
• Demonstrate safe and effective handling of hazardous medications in preparation techniques and disposal.
• Label the investigational drug in accordance with Departmental Standards and Policy and Procedures.
• Prepare pediatric dilution.
• Repackage the appropriate amount of investigational drug for distribution.
• Record all necessary information for the preparation and control of extemporaneous packaging.
• Dispose of all needles, syringes, and pharmaceutical waste in the appropriate container.
• Maintain the integrity of the laminar flow hood through routine cleaning, changing of the pre-filters, and adhering to all preparation procedures.
• Distribution of medication: Transport medications and admixtures to the assigned clinic, pharmacy, or nursing unit.
• Collect, fill, and deliver investigational drugs to assigned patient care areas.
• Acquire drugs from sponsor designated suppliers, other satellites/pharmacies, or locations when necessary.
• Assist in all areas of the pharmacy department as needed.
• Answer the telephone promptly and courteously in accordance with UI CARE standards. All calls should be answered by the second ring.
• Maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment.
• Routine cleaning of all areas of pharmacy including counters, shelves, computer monitors, computer keyboards.
• Shelving books, clearing clutter from counters, and keeping the pharmacy neat and orderly.
• Maintaining and replenishing investigational drug/ancillary supplies.
• Assisting in the maintenance of minimum acceptable inventory, monitoring and removing expired drugs from inventory.
• Assists with study billing, such as collection and distribution of paper billing forms, entering charges into electronic billing system, and assisting with research of billing questions.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum

Qualifications

Required:

• Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.

• Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:

• Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

• OR

• Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

• Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible work experience as a pharmacy technician, which included one (1) year of lead worker duties.

• Demonstrated USP797/800 sterile compounding skill utilizing aseptic technique.

• Illinois Residency is required.
