About the Role The Petrol Apprentice will assist with the repair and servicing of motor vehicles according to factory/distributor standards, as part of a 3-year Petrol Mechanic Apprenticeship and a 4-year theory/practical Merseta programme to complete the trade test.
What You'll Do
- Assist in the repair and servicing of vehicles according to dealer/distributor standards and within the flat rate time.
- Together with the journeyman, identify required parts and ensure correct parts are ordered.
- Obtain authorization prior to carrying out additional work or dismantling components.
- Obtain technical information from journeyman/technician on problem jobs.
- Adhere strictly to technical specifications laid down by the manufacturer, or as instructed by the journeyman.
- Follow workshop policies and procedures; keep notes on repair orders as required.
- Manage parts handling: bag used parts (except oil and fuel filters) and place on passenger floor; tag warranty replaced parts and hand to Warranty Store; ensure oils and parts are booked out on repair orders.
- Keep vehicle and work area clean and safe; maintain tools and ensure use of protective items.
- Record start and finish times on repair orders and report faulty/broken equipment to the journeyman/technician.
- Use tools with care and maintain a complete set of tools per RMI standards.
- Perform any ad hoc responsibilities as required.
What We're Looking For
- Grade 12 / equivalent (preferably technical matric) with mathematics; science and motor theory beneficial.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transport.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Clean criminal record and a passion for the automotive/mechanical industry.
- Enjoy working with hands and following instructions from journeymen/technicians.
