Permit Technician
Robert Half's client is looking for a Permit Technician to support permitting operations for a long-term contract position in California. This role is well suited for an administrative specialist who can manage permit documentation, coordinate reviews, and provide responsive service to contractors, agencies, and the public. The ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to keep multiple applications moving efficiently while maintaining compliance with municipal requirements.
Permit Technician Responsibilities:

Review permit submissions for completeness, confirm required supporting materials are included, and route documents to the appropriate reviewers for approval.

Monitor plan review progress, follow up on outstanding comments, assemble review packets, and help keep turnaround times on schedule.

Determine applicable application and review fees, process payments accurately, and maintain clear records of transactions and permit status updates.

Issue a range of permits, including building, grading, encroachment, and counter permits, once all requirements and approvals have been satisfied.

Coordinate with external agencies and internal departments to verify that necessary clearances are secured before permits are released.

Partner with code compliance staff to address permit-related questions, support enforcement follow-up, and help ensure adherence to building regulations.

Maintain organized departmental files and reference materials while preparing reports, correspondence, comment summaries, and permit activity data.

Provide responsive customer service to contractors, developers, engineers, agency representatives, and community members by answering questions and guiding them through permit procedures.

Experience in administrative support, permitting, or a related municipal or public sector environment.

Working knowledge of permit processing practices, construction terminology, and municipal codes related to inspections and development activity.

Ability to read and review plans, applications, and technical documents for completeness and procedural compliance.

Proficiency with office software and computerized recordkeeping systems, including permit tracking or similar database tools.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with the public and multiple stakeholders.

Accuracy in fee calculation, payment tracking, record maintenance, and preparation of reports or official correspondence.

Familiarity with contractor licensing verification, agency coordination, and customer communication in a fast-paced service setting.
