Payroll Supervisor/Manager/Director
Robert Half is recruiting for an experienced Payroll and Benefits manager to lead payroll, benefits, and broader human resources operations. This role combines strategic partnership with senior leadership and hands-on oversight of payroll processing, compliance, employee benefits, and policy administration. The ideal candidate brings strong judgment, deep knowledge of multi-state payroll practices, and the ability to guide staff through complex employee matters while maintaining accurate and compliant processes.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior leaders to align payroll, benefits, employee relations, and talent practices with organizational goals and workforce needs.
- Direct end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of salaries, deductions, taxes, garnishments, benefit withholdings, and related transactions for a large employee population.
- Review and authorize payroll changes such as hires, separations, compensation updates, and status changes while maintaining complete and accurate transaction records.
- Oversee benefits administration for health, life, disability, retirement, and savings programs, including employee communications, enrollments, deductions, and employer contributions.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local employment and wage regulations by evaluating policies, procedures, and day-to-day practices.
- Lead internal reviews and audits of payroll, benefits, and HR records to confirm data integrity, process accuracy, and adherence to plan and legal requirements.
- Advise managers and HR team members on sensitive employee issues, including accommodations, investigations, disciplinary actions, and offboarding decisions.
- Manage departmental operations by setting priorities, allocating staff resources, supervising workflow, and coaching team members toward strong performance.
- Evaluate market trends and competing compensation or benefits offerings, then recommend program improvements that support retention and competitiveness.
- Complete reporting, documentation, vendor coordination, and other assigned duties needed to support efficient payroll and HR administration.
