About the Role The Unit Secretary/Patient Care Technician supports Critical Care units by coordinating equipment, documenting patient information, and providing basic nursing care under RN supervision. This role combines administrative duties with direct patient care to ensure efficient unit operations and patient safety.

What You'll Do

  • Order special care equipment for patients using unit protocol and hospital computer systems. Analyze documents to ensure department-specific requirements are met before entering orders or sending documents to HIM for scanning. Continually update electronic medical information vital for patient care. When applicable, ensure unit-specific patient charges are entered into the information system. Triages physician and inter-department questions and resolves or refers as needed. Provide customer service using the AIDET approach, answer telephones, and escort patients as needed.
  • Provide patient care under RN supervision; assist with ADLs, respond to patient call lights, bed making, etc.
  • Obtain patient vitals (temperature, pulse, respirations, BP, SpO2), intake/output, BG checks, and report abnormalities. Perform RN-directed procedures (thermal applications, perineal care, IV/Foley removal, emptying Foley bags, applying restraints, backrubs).
  • Collect specimens (urine, feces, sputum) and deliver as required. Document basic patient care, orders (specimens, labs, diet, EKGs) in EMR per unit protocol.
  • Transport medications (non-controlled) and may access secured med storage for job duties.
  • Assist nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating and transporting patients; obtain appointment confirmations. May perform Observation Assistant duties.
  • Provide administrative support (photocopying, electronic transmission of medical information, contacting physicians, pharmacy, coordination with departments) and monitor office equipment.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High school diploma or 5 years’ CNA/PCT experience with 3 years in an acute care setting.
  • Certification: Completion of Accredited CNA, EMT, or paramedics course, or current enrollment in accredited nursing program with completion of at least one major clinical rotation.
  • Current CPR certification (American Heart Association).
  • Data entry or order entry experience on a computer preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $18.84 - $27.32 hourly (USD).
