Job title: Pathology Lab Assistant
About the Role Under the supervision of the Histology Supervisor, this role handles registration, accessioning, identification and processing of Pathology specimens, including staining and preparation of liquid-based GYN/Non-GYN specimens and H&E/IHC staining of surgical specimens. The position also supports gross dissection, frozen section staining, and autopsy-related duties under medical direction.
What You'll Do
- Process surgical, cytology, and histology specimens.
- Receive Pathology specimens into the department.
- Utilize instruments in processing specimens.
- Perform dissecting duties, such as opening skull, removing brain, and assists in taking cultures and blood.
- Perform quality control, checks, calibrates and maintain equipment in working order.
- Prepare autopsy room, instruments, supplies, blocks, and specimen containers.
- Collect waste Formula 83 and Ethanol for recycling.
- Prepare and package specimens for send out to outside lab.
- Demonstrates compliance with corporate, departmental and job-specific requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Education: Two years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Associates Degree).
- Experience: One year of experience in a related job is required; experience in a clinical pathology laboratory preferred.
- Certification, Registration & Licensure: None required.
- Supervisory/Work Environment: Under the general supervision of the Histology Supervisor and medical direction of the Pathologist.
- Physical & Safety: Regularly lift, carry or push/pull up to 20 pounds; fine motor skills; color vision, depth perception, far vision, near vision, and peripheral vision; exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, non-weather related heat or cold, toxic or caustic chemicals; occasional exposure to airborne contaminants, electrical hazards, moving mechanical parts, slippery surfaces, and variable weather conditions; noise level usually moderate.
