About the Role Mercy University Center for STEM Education (MCSE) is partnering with NACCE to host a summer learning initiative for middle school students, weekdays 9:00am–3:00pm from July 13–August 24 on Mercy University's Bronx campus. We are seeking current K-12 TAs, graduate students or upper-level undergraduates in STEM subjects to serve as Teaching Assistants in the STEM Achievers at Mercy University Summer Program, supporting 65 middle school students with hands-on instruction in 3D Printing, Augmented Reality, Design Thinking and Social Entrepreneurship. An on-site program director and four teachers will be on campus, and five Teaching Assistants will support instructors to help students in the STEM Achievers Curriculum.
Instructors and Teaching Assistants will also be encouraged to supplement the Camp Curriculum with STEM-focused activities using resources and experiences available on campus or through off-campus field trips. The learning day will include two hours of classroom instruction in the morning and afternoon, as well as whole-group activities, lunch, and recreation. Teaching Assistants will be expected to help oversee common whole-group and recreational activities, and must propose one recreational activity they can lead one day a week. Lunch is provided.
This is an exciting opportunity for anyone in the fields of STEM or Education to work with certified secondary teachers teaching using innovative technology resources.
What You'll Do
- Actively engage with students during daily recreation periods, including participating in and supervising outdoor sports and games.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment by participating in activities to build rapport and ensure all students participate safely.
- Lead and participate in outdoor physical activities in various weather conditions.
- Maintain a safety-minded approach with proactive supervision to ensure student safety and fair play during high-energy recreational sessions.
- Support instructors with the STEM Achievers Curriculum, including hands-on instruction in 3D Printing, Augmented Reality, Design Thinking and Social Entrepreneurship.
- Oversee lunch and recreation periods and help manage group activities.
- Propose and lead one recreational activity per week as part of the application.
- Collaborate with the on-site program director and other staff to create a positive learning environment.
What We're Looking For
- Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program with interest in STEM and/or Education.
- Availability July 13–August 24, weekdays 9:00am–3:00pm.
- Interest in STEM or Education and experience working with middle school students or youth.
- Ability to supervise recreation and outdoor activities, and to foster a safe, inclusive environment.
- Willingness to work with certified secondary teachers and support innovative technology-based learning.
Nice to Have
- Prior experience in youth programs, coaching, or leading recreational activities.
- Familiarity with 3D printing, augmented reality, or related STEM tools.
- Passion for digital inclusion and hands-on learning experiences.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $18.00 - $45.00 per hour (hourly).
