About this role

Packaging Manager, World Wide Grocery Stores - Private Brands NA

The World Wide Grocery Private Brands team is looking for a Packaging Manager to join our team. This role serves as the technical owner and packaging authority for a set of categories within our PB business. In this role, you will own the end-to-end packaging strategy for your categories across both Amazon and Whole Foods Market (WFM) branded products, with limited guidance. You will be the end-to-end packaging owner for your assigned food categories, responsible for new product commercialization, cost reduction, sustainability, and omnichannel performance. Our product packaging must work across all Grocery channels, including WFM stores, Amazon Fresh, and Same Day Grocery. You will work backwards from customer needs to optimize packaging that protects product quality, reduces damage, and meets financial targets.

You will develop deep expertise in the materials within your categories, and build relationships with Private Brand suppliers and their packaging partners. You will work within supplier capabilities to optimize packaging solutions, partnering with Sourcing Managers to influence decisions and drive improvements over time.

As this role supports both Whole Foods Market and Amazon Private Brands, you must be a strong champion for both brands' distinct missions and values. This means being passionate about WFM's commitment to nourishing people and the planet, while embracing Amazon's mission to make delicious food accessible and affordable for everyone.

Key job responsibilities

  • Category Ownership & Commercialization
  • Own packaging deliverables for your assigned category portfolio (e.g., Snacks; Beverages & Meals; or Meat, Seafood & Frozen), including specification development, sample coordination, and testing for new product launches.
  • Build relationships with Private Brand suppliers and their packaging partners to understand capabilities, identify opportunities, and drive improvements.
  • Omnichannel Performance
  • Ensure packaging performs across all Grocery channels (Whole Foods Market stores, Amazon Fresh delivery, and Core e-commerce fulfillment) so products can be sold omnichannel.
  • Evaluate and improve existing packaging formats with suppliers to reduce damage, lower shipping costs, and improve the customer experience.
  • Assess and improve outer packaging and shippable containers appropriate for e-commerce, reducing shipping costs, ensuring undamaged product, and minimizing waste for consumers.
  • Cost Reduction & Sustainability
  • Leverage deep material and substrate expertise within your categories to identify cost reduction and plastic reduction opportunities.
  • Continually find ways to drive cost out of our packaging efforts while maintaining product quality and customer experience.
  • Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Perform lab testing with the ability to translate and articulate overall impact and opportunities that drive value for the business.
  • Analyze customer needs and feedback to develop optimal product packaging, leveraging the unique opportunities being an online brand can provide.
  • Maintain accurate packaging specifications across your category portfolio.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Provide packaging expertise across cross-functional teams, evaluate supplier packaging proposals, and advise senior management on packaging trends and solutions.
  • Influence packaging decisions across the Sourcing Organization without direct authority.
