About this role

About the Role The SEIU UHW West Organizer/Union Representative builds a workers’ organization of motivated, empowered leaders to protect workers’ rights, improve the quality of their work lives and the care they provide, and to win. This full-time, exempt role provides leadership for training, leadership development, new organizing, internal organizing and political action on behalf of the Union. What You'll Do

  • Design and implement organizing campaigns to win Union recognition for unorganized workplaces; build organizing committees; identify issues; leadership development; prepare workers for NLRB, MMBA and other elections.
  • Work with the Executive Board, shop stewards and committees to advance campaigns and ensure effective functioning of the Union, including leadership identification, recruitment, development, and training of members, stewards and new staff.
  • Lead and maintain a steward system to empower and mobilize workers through contract negotiation, contract enforcement, and other issues.
  • Assign tasks to stewards and direct their work in implementing Union policies on all workplace issues; educate workers on how to use that knowledge.
  • Communicate with workers: listen, frame issues, and motivate active participation; visit work sites regularly across all shifts.
  • Listen to workers’ concerns; determine when to file grievances and how to settle or prepare grievances for arbitration; organize rallies, demonstrations and strike support; build community support.
  • Develop written materials including newsletters, training materials, literature, and press releases; participate in lobbying at state, federal and local levels and mobilize members around the Union’s political program.
  • Lead workers in community issues, build external relationships, and recruit rank-and-file members to sit on Political Action Committees; participate in legislative and electoral campaigns.
  • Represent the Union in community and labor coalition activities; lead other organizers and be responsible for a program. What We're Looking For
  • Demonstrated experience designing and leading organizing campaigns and leadership development within unions or labor organizations.
  • Ability to recruit, train and develop members, stewards, and staff; strong communication skills to educate, frame issues, and motivate participation.
  • Willingness to visit work sites across shifts and travel within Southern California; ability to build relationships with workers and communities.
  • Knowledge of grievance processes, contract negotiation/enforcement and arbitration; familiarity with NLRB and MMBA elections is a plus.
  • Experience organizing rallies, demonstrations, strike actions, and public campaigns; capacity to mobilize community support.
  • Experience with political action, lobbying, and coalition building; ability to recruit members to Political Action Committees and participate in electoral campaigns.
  • Ability to lead others and represent the Union in coalitions and external partnerships. Nice to Have
  • Knowledge of or experience with NLRB, MMBA and other elections.
  • Additional experience in community organizing or coalition work outside the Union. Compensation & Benefits
