Job title: Organizer-in-Training

About the Role We are seeking an Organizer-in-Training to assist UPTE Organizers, Lead Organizers, and member leaders in organizing work and to train as a future union Organizer. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the position supports a militant, progressive union and labor movement across healthcare, research, and technical fields. This role emphasizes leadership development, mentorship, and hands-on organizing practice while contributing to campaigns and member engagement.

What You'll Do

  • Assist UPTE Organizers, Lead Organizers, and member leaders in the work of the Union
  • Provide a broad range of support to UPTE Organizers and member leaders
  • Help train members to plan, lead and conduct organizing, political, legislative, and issue-oriented campaigns
  • Help develop member leaders to run strong chapters capable of addressing the needs of members
  • Recruit new members to participate in union activities and political campaigns
  • Maintain regular one-on-one contact with members
  • Develop and maintain effective worksite leadership structures through recruiting, training, and supporting stewards and other union leaders
  • Help develop and deliver formal and informal education programs to train stewards and worksite leaders
  • Work in all elements of organizing through leadership development and mentoring, rather than assuming sole responsibility for success

What We're Looking For

  • A commitment to social justice and building a movement of working people
  • Ability to conduct one-on-one visits, site visits, in-person meetings, phone calls, video meetings, and other interactions with members and potential members
  • Prior experience with labor organizing, activism, or community organizing is a plus
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Valid California driver's license; travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are occasionally required

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with labor organizing, activism, or community organizing is a plus

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual compensation for the Organizing-in-Training will be $75,000 for an expected period of several months. USD
