About this role

This role is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Ophthalmic Clinic Team and support Mercy Ships Crew and Day Crew (in-country workers). Activities include organizing ophthalmic pre-operative assessments and post-operative follow-ups, coordinating clinical patient flow and liaising with the Day Surgery Team for day of surgery patient issues. They collaborate closely with the Ophthalmic Team Manager and Ophthalmic Day Surgery Coordinator regarding overall ophthalmic processes and patient flow.

What you will contribute

  • Maintain a well-stocked, clean Ophthalmic Clinic; recommend supplies and equipment needs for immediate use and future planning
  • Coordinate daily schedules, routines and activities of Ophthalmic Clinic Team including Crew and Day Crew; circulate and assist where needed
  • Coordinate orientation and training of Day Crew in conjunction with Ophthalmic Team Manager and Ophthalmic clinicians
  • Supervise Day Crew and contribute to performance evaluations
  • Perform and coordinate administrative duties required for smooth operation of the Ophthalmic Clinic, including the hospital database, patient records and statistics.
  • Coordinate scanning of patient records throughout field service
  • Coordinate patient flow, patient surgery scheduling, follow-up scheduling and medical clinic consultation scheduling in conjunction with ophthalmic clinicians, including the Ophthalmic Team Manager, Ophthalmic Provider, Ophthalmic Clinic Nurse, Ophthalmic Day Surgery Nurse Team Leader, and the OR Nurse Ophthalmic Team Leader and Ophthalmic Surgeon as required.
  • Coordinate response to medical emergencies and post-operative complications
  • Provide spiritual leadership and emotional support as needed to patients, Crew and Day Crew regarding adverse medical conditions
  • Coordinate response for the Ophthalmic Clinic for regularly occurring ship based fire and safety drills; Ensure all muster and evacuation procedures are followed as per current policies, coordinating as necessary Day Crew, patients, and caregivers

For This Role, You Will Need

  • Preferred candidates would have qualifications, such as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT), Optician, Licensed Optometrist (non-therapeutic), Therapeutic Optometrist or Ophthalmic Nurse.
  • Recent medical clinic or one year Ophthalmic clinic experience, preferred
  • Management experience (low or high level), healthcare specific experience preferred
  • Supportive of Mercy Ships mission and vision, and committed to its core values
  • Understand and apply servant leadership, work collaboratively with integrity and demonstrate accountability
  • Able to live in and contribute to community life, requiring stable and healthy interpersonal skills
  • Strong clinic administration and interpersonal skills; good computer skills; database systems an asset
  • Good medical emergency response skills
  • Requires flexibility and sensitivity to Language and Cultural diversity; adaptable and comfortable with patient contact
  • Able to be a self-starter, detail-oriented and accurate
  • Fluent in English
  • This position is a path to the Ophthalmic Team Manager role
