Job title: Opera Theater Director (Tenure-Track)
About the Role The Oberlin Conservatory invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Opera Theater beginning in the 2027-28 academic year. The role includes directing mainstage operas, teaching opera workshops and courses, and overseeing production and budget in collaboration with the conservatory and theater departments.
What You'll Do
- Direct mainstage operas
- Teach opera workshop classes, in collaboration with the music director/pianist
- Teach seminar in opera directing and/or other opera courses as expertise and interest allow
- Oversee opera budget, in collaboration with the conservatory finance manager
- Coordinate design process and all production personnel for the mainstage operas, in collaboration with the theater department
- Coordinate mainstage repertoire selection process, in collaboration with voice faculty, opera staff and theater personnel
What We're Looking For
- Outstanding record of professional experience as an opera director
- Advanced degree in opera theater, theater, or equivalent experience
- Experience as a lyric theater director or equivalent performance experience; musical and linguistic expertise
- Practical knowledge of theater technology
- Experience teaching acting and/or movement to singers
- Demonstrated success in working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff and students
