POSITION DETAILS

The New York State Opportunity Promise (NYSOP) is a state-funded program that supports adult learners returning to college to complete a degree. The NYSOP Financial Aid Advisor provides comprehensive financial aid counseling and targeted support to returning students, helping them navigate federal, state, and institutional aid processes that enable re-enrollment and persistence.

Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid (or designee), the Advisor serves as a key member of both the Financial Aid Office and the campus NYSOP team. The position supports outreach to stop out students, assists with eligibility review, and ensures that adult learners receive accurate, timely guidance on accessing financial resources.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides individualized financial aid counseling to prospective, returning, and continuing NYSOP students, including FAFSA/TAP completion, verification, SAP appeals, and award interpretation.
  • Advises students on federal, state, and institutional aid programs, loan options, payment plans, and strategies to reduce financial barriers.
  • Reviews student records to determine NYSOP eligibility and collaborates with advisors to support re-engagement and enrollment.
  • Participates in proactive outreach to stop out students through phone, email, text, and virtual or in-person sessions.
  • Conducts workshops and information sessions tailored to adult learners and returning students.
  • Processes financial aid documents and maintains accurate records in CUNYfirst and related systems.

Education

  • Services Corporation (HESC) policies, and CUNY guidelines.
  • Supports the preparation of reports related to NYSOP enrollment, financial aid activity, and student outcomes.
  • Coordinates with the Scholarship Office to manage scholarship awards and their integration with students' financial aid packages.
  • Collaborates with Enrollment Management, Advisement, Registrar, Bursar, and other offices to support seamless re-entry for NYSOP students.
  • Participates in campus events, orientations, and adult learner initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director and Associate Directors of the Financial Aid office.
  • Essential duties require on campus presence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Two years of experience in financial aid counseling, student services, or a related higher education function.

  • Knowledge of federal and New York State financial aid programs, including FAFSA, TAP, Excelsior, and Title IV regulations.

  • Experience supporting adult learners, returning students, or special populations.

  • Familiarity with CUNYfirst, HESC systems, and financial aid processing tools.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.

  • Commitment to equity, access, and supporting non-traditional students.

  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours when required.

  • Verifies eligibility for Federal and State financial aid programs including grants, scholarships, and guaranteed student loans

  • Performs application intake, evaluation, processing and awarding

  • Assists in the production of Financial Aid online, print material, and websites

  • Advises students on good academic standing requirements and the appeal process; reviews appeals for dependency overrides and budget adjustments

  • Conducts group workshops and represents the financial aid office at various on- and off- campus events

  • Serves as a liaison between the college office and Direct Loan Providers

  • $50,350 - $56,641; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
