Job Title: Nursery Teacher

Location: Lagos

Description

  • The Nursery Teacher will be responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and stimulating learning environment for young children, supporting their early childhood development, and delivering age-appropriate educational activities.
  • The ideal candidate should be passionate about working with young children, patient, creative, nurturing, and skilled in early childhood education. The successful candidate will support children's cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and language development while ensuring their safety and well-being in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons and activities in line with the school's curriculum.
  • Develop daily and weekly lesson plans, schemes of work, and instructional materials.
  • Use interactive teaching methods, including storytelling, songs, rhymes, games, arts, crafts, and hands-on learning activities.
  • Introduce foundational concepts in literacy, numeracy, communication, and general knowledge.
  • Encourage curiosity, creativity, exploration, and independent learning among pupils.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate children's different learning abilities and developmental needs.
  • Monitor children's learning progress and provide appropriate support to improve learning outcomes.

Child Development and Welfare:

  • Support children's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, sharing, cooperation, and respect for others.
  • Create a warm, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment.
  • Identify developmental concerns and communicate observations to the Head Teacher and parents where appropriate.
  • Promote children's confidence, independence, and self-expression.
  • Provide emotional support and help children develop positive relationships with their peers.

Classroom Management:

  • Maintain a clean, organised, safe, and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Establish and maintain age-appropriate classroom routines and rules.
  • Manage children's behaviour using positive reinforcement and appropriate discipline strategies.
  • Ensure learning materials, toys, and classroom resources are properly arranged and maintained.
  • Supervise children during classroom activities, playtime, meals, and other school activities.
  • Ensure smooth transitions between lessons, activities, and daily routines.

Child Safety and Safeguarding:

  • Maintain constant supervision of children to ensure their safety at all times.
  • Implement the school's child protection and safeguarding policies.
  • Ensure that classroom equipment, toys, and learning materials are safe and suitable for young children.
  • Observe and report any signs of illness, injury, neglect, abuse, or unusual behaviour through the appropriate school channels.
  • Support children's hygiene, toileting, and personal care needs in accordance with school policies and age-appropriate practices.
  • Follow established procedures for arrival, dismissal, and the handover of children to authorised persons.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

  • Observe, assess, and document children's developmental and learning progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, classroom participation, and individual learning milestones.
  • Prepare pupils' progress reports and contribute to termly assessments.
  • Identify children who may require additional learning support and collaborate with relevant school personnel.
  • Provide constructive feedback and recommendations to support each child's development.

Parent and Guardian Engagement:

  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with parents and guardians.
  • Communicate regularly about children's progress, behaviour, and general well-being.
  • Participate in parent-teacher meetings and school engagement activities.
  • Address parental concerns professionally and escalate sensitive matters to the Head Teacher when necessary.
  • Provide parents with appropriate feedback on ways to support learning and development at home.

School Activities and Collaboration:

  • Participate in school assemblies, excursions, celebrations, and extracurricular activities.

  • Collaborate with fellow teachers and other school staff to ensure consistent teaching and care practices.

  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development programmes.

  • Contribute ideas to improve teaching methods, classroom activities, and early childhood learning experiences.

  • Perform other teaching-related duties as assigned by the Head Teacher.

  • Requirements and Qualifications

  • NCE, Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Education, or a related discipline.

  • 1–3 years of teaching experience, preferably in a nursery or early childhood education setting.

  • Knowledge of early childhood education principles, child development, and age-appropriate teaching strategies.

  • Understanding of classroom management and child safeguarding practices.

  • Experience with lesson planning, learning assessments, and classroom activities.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Creativity, patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with young children.

  • Ability to manage a classroom effectively and work collaboratively with other teachers.

  • Basic computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications are an advantage.

  • Relevant teaching certification or TRCN registration is an added advantage.
