About this role
Nuclear Control Room Operator
Job Description
Job Title: Nuclear Control Room Operator | Location: Hinkley Point C, Bridgwater, Somerset
Salary: From £56,000 to £86,905 per annum
Employment Type: On-site | Career Area: Hinkley Point C | LinkedIn Hashtag: #LI-Onsite
Join the team helping to operate one of the UK's most advanced nuclear power stations. At EDF, Success is Personal. As a Nuclear Control Room Operator, you don't need previous nuclear experience. If you're curious, willing to learn, and motivated to develop new skills, we'll provide the training and support to help you succeed.
The Opportunity
Working at the heart of Hinkley Point C's operations, you'll help generate low-carbon electricity for millions of homes while developing specialist skills through industry-leading training. By monitoring plant conditions and following operating procedures, you'll support the safe, reliable generation of electricity helping EDF drive the UK's journey towards An Electric Britain.
You don't need previous nuclear experience to apply. Many of the skills that make someone successful in this role, such as following procedures, assessing risk, solving problems and making informed decisions, are developed across a wide range of industries, professions and life experiences.
Through a structured 18 to 24-month training programme, you'll gradually develop the technical knowledge, operational expertise and confidence needed to become a fully plant-facing Reactor Operator. No two learning journeys will be identical, and experienced colleagues will support your development every step of the way.
For candidates bringing relevant operational, nuclear or military experience, we'll look to build on your existing knowledge and skills as part of your development journey.
Who You Are
To be shortlisted, you need to offer an HNC qualification or an equivalent qualification in a STEM-related discipline. We're interested in the skills, behaviours and potential you can bring, not a specific career path.
We're looking for someone who demonstrates attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety. You'll be motivated by continuous learning and excited by the opportunity to develop specialist expertise within a highly skilled operational environment.
Experience and transferable skills that could provide a strong foundation for success in this role may come from engineering, manufacturing, operations, oil and gas, emergency response, the armed forces, the Royal Navy, nuclear operations or other regulated environments. We're open to a variety of backgrounds and career paths.
We're looking for potential rather than a single career path. If you can see yourself in this role, we'd encourage you to apply, even if your experience doesn't match every example outlined above.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Nuclear Control Room Operator, you'll undertake a structured training programme designed to prepare you for this highly skilled role. As your training progresses, you'll learn how to:
- Monitor and control plant systems
- Apply operating procedures and safety standards
- Assess and respond to changing operational conditions
- Work closely with colleagues across Operations and Technical teams
- Support the safe, reliable generation of low-carbon electricity
- Make informed decisions in a dynamic operational environment You'll be supported every step of the way by experienced colleagues, specialist instructors and a team committed to helping you succeed.
Hear From Our Nuclear Control Room Operators
No two Nuclear Control Room Operators share the same career journey. Here's what some of our team had to say about their experiences at EDF to date:
Keith, Reactor Operator, Hinkley Point C:
"At the moment, during the commissioning phase of the project, I enjoy being able to learn the systems in depth and throughout their testing phases. This will provide invaluable experience when operating the plant from the Control Room.”
Katie, Reactor Operator, Hinkley Point C:
"You don’t have to have a traditional nuclear background to succeed. I had worked in defence and aviation, but my most recent experience was in engineering project management. In reality, I've been surprised by just how much of my previous experience has been useful."
Phoebe, Reactor Operator Trainee, Hinkley Point C:
"Throughout my time with EDF I have been supported, encouraged and challenged by those around me, and I am made to feel like a valued and respected member of any team that I am a part of. From the start, the environment has been welcoming and respectful, so I have never felt embarrassed asking for help or support."
Your Location
This role is based at Hinkley Point C in Bridgwater, Somerset, home to one of the UK's most significant clean energy projects. You'll join a growing team helping to deliver reliable, low-carbon electricity while enjoying access to the coastline, countryside and communities that make the Southwest a great place to live and work.
Pay, Benefits and Culture
Alongside a starting salary of between £56,506 and £86,905 per annum, depending on skills and experience, potential for an annual bonus, and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.
