About this role
Meteorological Data Scientist
The R&D Team is a mixture of scientists and engineers committed to generating the best and most novel data and models across all times: historical, real-time and forecast. The story just begins when the data hits our ingest and post-processing services. Every product that the user sees is the result of a pipeline of algorithms that needs to be run quickly and continuously. We are the team that builds the architecture behind the data and the models, to prepare the weather analyses, for the Product and Engineering team to serve to the masses.
- We’re looking for a Meteorological Data Scientist with strong operational forecasting experience to help customers maximize their usage of proprietary satellites, NWP, and AI model data.
This role requires a mind for meteorological data and forecasting. The candidate will dive headfirst into our satellite data, NWP and AI weather models, and other meteorological data to produce product prototypes, strengthen product use cases, perform quality assurance and control, and validate satellites and models. You’ll have the opportunity to work hands-on with state of the art AI weather models and satellite data no one else has seen from Tomorrow.io and our partners.
What You'll Do
- Develop data visualizations, statistical analyses, and product prototypes that maximize Tomorrow.io meteorological data for customer use cases.
- Perform validations of AI weather models and products.
- Partner closely with Weather Science, Weather Applications, Bespoke Solutions, and Space and Sensor teams to troubleshoot performance of models and observation data, and to strengthen use cases of our data.
- Use AI tools and model data to produce new product prototypes for scientists and end users.
- Work with Marketing, Accounts, and Customer Teams to produce customer-focused use cases, validations and value propositions for Tomorrow.io meteorological data; interfacing with and guiding customers as needed.
- Work with scientists and customers on Tomorrow.io proprietary satellite data use cases.
What You Bring:
-
A Passion for meteorology — A degree in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology is required.
-
3+ years of experience as an operational meteorologist or research atmospheric scientist (with demonstrated experience with customer-facing work, weather data visualization, weather data integration, and AI tools)
-
Curious mindset — Think deeply about why meteorological data works the way it does, and how to probe for the most logically consistent outcomes.
-
Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with experience working cross-functionally and in customer-facing roles.
-
Strong hands-on skills with scientific code (e.g., Python), using common packages for:
-
Data processing and analysis (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, xarray, or equivalent).
-
Data visualization (e.g., CartoPy, MetPy, or similar).
-
Statistical analysis and validation.
-
Experience with cloud compute.
-
Familiarity with meteorological and geospatial data formats (NetCDF, GRIB, Zarr, GeoJSON, METAR, TAF).
-
Solid understanding of data architecture and pipelines, including working with structured and unstructured datasets.
-
Proven experience integrating and operationalizing AI-assisted development tools into scientific and engineering workflows.
-
Experience with integrating AI-assisted communication of weather information (chatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, etc) into workflows.
-
This commitment to ongoing assessment and improvement is key to creating a workplace that is not only diverse and inclusive but also fair and just. Anticipated salary range for this role is $105-115k subject to local market and candidates skills and experience. Comprehensive health benefits, unlimited paid time off and other benefits included.
