Met Lab Machinist

About the Role Volt is seeking a Met Lab Machinist in Decatur, IL to support metallurgical laboratory activities and provide machining support for metallurgical testing. The role involves assisting with photos, mechanical testing, and hardness testing of ferrous casting, steel, and forged components, as well as lab cleanup and parts/material handling to keep the lab running smoothly. What You'll Do

• Provide machining support to the metallurgical testing laboratory.
• Perform or assist with photos, mechanical testing, and hardness testing of ferrous casting, steel, and forged components as required to qualify products.
• Conduct lab support duties including cleaning, organizing, and moving parts/materials.
• Read and follow written instructions and blueprints; maintain high attention to detail and quality.
• Operate equipment including abrasive cut-off saws, surface grinders, lathes, reciprocating mill, and large band saws.
• Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, including supervisors and engineers.
• Be team oriented, self-motivated, and flexible to weekends and overtime when needed.
• This is a full-time, contract position with a pay range based on education, experience, and responsibilities. What We're Looking For
• Several years of shop floor experience performing saw cutting, grinding, ASTM E23 (Charpy impact testing) & ASTM E8/E8M, and F606/F606M (tensile) testing, along with mounting & polishing micros, magnetic particle analysis, and basic photography.
• Ability to follow written instructions and read blueprints; strong attention to detail and quality orientation.
• Experience operating abrasive cut-off saws, surface grinders, lathes, reciprocating mills, and large band saws.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams; willingness to work weekends and overtime. Compensation & Benefits
• Pay Rate: $24 - $30 per hour (USD).
