Job title: Medical Student Academic Advisor and Learning Specialist
About the Role The Medical Student Academic Advisor and Learning Specialist in the Office of Student Success provides longitudinal, developmentally structured academic advising and learning support for medical students across all four years of the curriculum. This role uses individualized coaching, learning assessments, and evidence-based strategies to enhance performance, including NBME/USMLE preparation and remediation planning, with proactive outreach in alignment with accreditation expectations.
What You'll Do
- Provide longitudinal academic advising and learning development for medical students across all four years.
- Conduct generalized and individualized coaching sessions on learning strategies, time management, and test-taking using data-driven analysis of performance and learning behaviors.
- Guide students on academic goal setting, performance improvement, interpretation of item-type errors, and application of clinical reasoning frameworks.
- Collaborate with partners to navigate curricular transitions (pre-clinical to clinical) and help design personalized learning plans.
- Assist in interpreting NBME-style performance data (item analysis and content-domain deficiencies) to guide targeted interventions.
- Develop and deliver workshops and small-group sessions on effective learning, metacognition, and cognitive resilience.
- Collaborate with student advisors, course/module directors, and faculty to ensure consistency of academic support strategies.
- Identify students at academic risk using performance data and implement proactive outreach.
- Develop and implement structured remediation and improvement plans with measurable benchmarks; participate in discussions on remediation and progression; maintain confidentiality and refer students to disability services and mental health resources as needed.
- Maintain confidential records, track advising utilization and outcomes, and conduct continuous quality improvement (CQI) on interventions.
- Collaborate with OSAA to monitor progress through required milestones and compile advising metrics for LCME accreditation and leadership reporting.
- Collaborate with course and clerkship directors to align academic support with curriculum and address systemic barriers.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Learning Sciences, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Instructional Design, or related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in the fields noted above.
- Relevant experience in academic advising, coaching, learning specialist/support, learning strategy instruction, or academic support with adult/graduate learners.
- Demonstrated knowledge of learning theory, metacognition, and assessment design relevant to student learning.
- Ability to analyze student performance data and implement targeted academic interventions or learning strategies.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with ability to build trust in high-stress academic environments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage students and initiate meaningful interactions.
- Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and promotion of emotional regulation.
Nice to Have
- Experience in medical education or other high-stakes graduate/professional programs.
- Experience coaching, advising, and/or leading others.
- Experience with LCME-accredited medical school environments.
Compensation & Benefits
- Minimum annual salary: $44,000 USD for a full-time position. Salary band: UC S03.
