Job role

Job Purpose

The Medical Laboratory Technician – Stem Cell will support the processing, preservation, testing, storage and documentation of stem cell and cellular therapy products. The role holder will assist with routine laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with quality, biosafety and regulatory standards to support safe and effective patient care.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

• Stem Cell Processing & Laboratory Support

• Assist in the collection, receipt, processing, isolation, cryopreservation, storage, thawing, and distribution of stem cell and cellular therapy products in accordance with established protocols.

• Prepare laboratory reagents, media, buffers, consumables, and equipment required for routine stem cell processing and testing.

• Support routine cell culture procedures, including cell maintenance, expansion, viability assessment, and sample preparation under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists.

• Label, package, transport, and store biological specimens while maintaining specimen integrity and chain of custody.

• Assist with stem cell viability testing, cell counting, and preparation of samples for laboratory analysis.

• Ensure proper handling and disposal of biological specimens and hazardous waste in accordance with biosafety guidelines.

• Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Perform routine quality control checks on laboratory equipment, reagents, and consumables to ensure reliable laboratory operations.

• Monitor and document storage temperatures, environmental conditions, and equipment performance.

• Maintain accurate laboratory records, worksheets, logbooks, and electronic documentation to ensure complete traceability of specimens and cellular therapy products.

• Assist with internal and external quality assurance programmes and support laboratory accreditation activities.

• Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), biosafety, infection prevention and control, and other applicable regulatory requirements.

• Participate in routine cleaning, decontamination, and maintenance of laboratory work areas.

• Equipment, Inventory & Documentation

• Operate, clean, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and laboratory procedures.

• Report equipment malfunctions promptly and coordinate preventive maintenance activities.

• Monitor laboratory inventory, maintain adequate stock levels of reagents and consumables, and report shortages in a timely manner.

• Assist in the preparation, review, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and laboratory documentation.

• Maintain audit-ready documentation and support regulatory inspections and accreditation assessments.

• Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work collaboratively with Medical Laboratory Scientists, clinicians, transplant physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to support stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy services.

• Assist in the orientation and training of new laboratory staff, interns, and students where required.

• Participate in departmental meetings, continuing professional development activities, competency assessments, and quality improvement initiatives.

• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.

• Contribute to a safe, efficient, and patient-centred laboratory environment by promoting teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or a related laboratory science discipline from a recognized institution.
• Current certification and/or registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) or other recognized regulatory body as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
• Minimum of two (2) years' relevant experience in a stem cell processing, cellular therapy, haematology, transplant, or clinical laboratory is desirable.
• Knowledge of stem cell processing, cryopreservation, specimen handling, laboratory quality systems and biosafety.
• Proficiency in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), laboratory equipment and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong attention to detail, communication, documentation and teamwork skills.
