Job role

The Medical Laboratory Technician - Microbiology will be responsible for performing routine and specialized microbiological tests to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. The role ensures the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of laboratory results while adhering to strict safety and quality standards.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

• Specimen Processing and Culture Setup

• Receive, label, and process clinical specimens (blood, urine, stool, swabs, etc.) according to established protocols.

• Perform initial specimen assessment for acceptability and proper documentation.

• Prepare and inoculate culture media for the isolation of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

• Perform Gram staining and other preliminary staining procedures for microscopic examination.

• Ensure proper storage and tracking of specimens to maintain integrity and chain of custody.

• Microbiological Testing and Analysis

• Perform routine microbiological tests, including culture reading, subculturing, and biochemical identification.

• Conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using automated systems or manual methods.

• Assist in performing molecular diagnostic tests (e.g., PCR) under supervision.

• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, and automated analyzers.

• Record and report test results accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

• Quality Control and Equipment Maintenance

• Perform daily quality control checks on reagents, media, and equipment.

• Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.

• Assist in the calibration and preventive maintenance of laboratory instruments.

• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all testing and safety protocols.

• Document all quality control activities, deviations, and corrective actions.

• Safety and Infection Control

• Adhere to strict infection control and biosafety protocols, including proper use of PPE.

• Handle biohazardous materials safely and dispose of waste according to regulations.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area to prevent contamination.

• Participate in safety training and drills and report any safety incidents or breaches.

• Support outbreak investigation and surveillance activities as directed.

• Administrative and Support Duties

• Prepare reagents, culture media and other laboratory supplies as needed.

• Assist in inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and stocking supplies.

• Support the training and orientation of new staff and trainees.

• Participate in departmental meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Ensure accurate and timely documentation in logs, worksheets, and electronic systems.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, or a related laboratory science discipline from a recognized institution.
• Current certification and/or registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician with the relevant regulatory authority
• Minimum of 1–3 years' experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory or related diagnostic laboratory is desirable.
• Practical knowledge of microbiological laboratory techniques, including specimen processing, culture preparation, microbial isolation and identification, Gram staining, microscopy, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment, microbiological media preparation, sterilization procedures, and routine equipment maintenance.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems, infection prevention and control practices, biosafety, and waste management protocols.
• Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain detailed laboratory records, and comply with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Proficiency in the use of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
