About the Role The Medical Interpreter I is responsible for assessing the needs of patients and providing assistance by interpretation of consent forms, diagnoses, discharge plans and any other type of patient-related information. What You'll Do
- Respond to interpretation requests throughout the Institute, with priority for emergency and urgent requests.
- Arrive on time to appointments and provide services from the point of entry through discharge.
- Interpret and transmit accurately and in understandable terms complex medical information from medical providers to patients, including interpretation of consent forms, diagnoses, during medical procedures, discharge plans and any other type of patient-related information.
- Interpret information from patients to medical providers.
- Assist patients and clinical providers throughout the hospital system in a professional and courteous manner; provide highest quality of service and, if necessary, refer the patient to the appropriate resource.
- Seek evaluation, certification and additional training in interpreting, health care practices and beliefs, and cultural differences.
- Maintain an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships and assist Interpreter Services staff with office-related tasks as needed.
- Accept and process assignments for language; follow office protocol, log information properly, contact patients, and inform Interpreter Services of changes in a timely manner.
- Maintain complete and accurate records of services rendered and documentation of patient-related information.
- Resolve issues and refer complex matters to the Supervisor of Interpreter Services as needed.
- Interpret medical information between providers and patient and/or family in three modalities (in-person/on-campus, video, telephonic).
- Recognize and respect diversity for all patients and DFCI workforce; act as cultural broker when culture-bound messages affect communication.
- Follow the Medical Interpreter Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities as needed; adhere to department procedures for initial interpreter screening and ongoing competencies by completing assessments (medical terminology, ethics, standards of practice, role of interpreter, and skills).

- Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in a human relations field preferred; 1 year of experience working as a medical interpreter required; working knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy.

- Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in a human relations field (e.g., Sociology, Psychology) preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $56,000.00 - $64,200.00 per year. Onsite per diem role.
