Discovery Life Role

About this role

Discovery Life, part of Discovery in Sandton, is looking for a medical doctor to join its small insurance medical team. The team gives specialist medical advice to several business units within Discovery Life.

The role supports underwriting, claims, product development and legal work with medical input, plus training for teams across Discovery Life, Discovery Group and Smart Service.

What you’ll do

  • Assess medical risk for underwriting so that Discovery Life carries risk well and stays profitable.

  • Review medical claims to confirm they are valid and keep the actual versus expected claims ratio at an acceptable level.

  • Give medical and technical guidance to Smart Service so customer service improves and policies can be activated.

  • Help write evidence-based standards, guidelines and forms for underwriting.

  • Answer medical questions from the distribution team and product actuaries, and help with product development.

  • Provide medical expertise to the legal team for ombudsman and court matters.

  • What you need

  • Completed medical studies, such as an MBChB or equivalent.

  • Completed internship and community service.

  • One to two years of work experience as a qualified doctor.

  • Full, active registration with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner.

  • Advantageous: postgraduate studies in Occupational Health.

  • Advantageous: postgraduate studies in Insurance Medicine.

  • Advantageous: experience in the long-term insurance industry.

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to handle complex cases.

  • Good communication and negotiation skills, and sound decision-making.

  • Attention to detail, problem-solving skills and the ability to work well with different teams.

  • Is this job for you?

  • This role suits a doctor who has some post-community service experience and enjoys working with data, risk and policy questions. You should be comfortable explaining medical points to non-medical colleagues and working at a fast pace.

  • Tips before you apply

  • Have your HPCSA registration details, qualification certificates and internship and community service records ready.

  • Show your work experience since community service, and name any cases, audits or guidelines you have worked on.

  • If you have postgraduate study in occupational health or insurance medicine, or industry experience, put it near the top of your CV.
