Job title: Medical Assistant (Temporary/Casual)

About the Role The Medical Assistant (Temporary/Casual) will provide essential clinical and administrative support for patient care across University of the Pacific's Sacramento Clinic, with potential travel to Stockton and San Francisco clinics. This role combines direct patient care, EMR documentation, and behind-the-scenes operational support to ensure efficient health services for students and staff.

What You'll Do

  • Obtain vital signs and input into EMR
  • Prepare patients for examination
  • Assist a provider with medical procedures
  • Educate students about health care issues and health insurance
  • Participate in outreach activities
  • Administer medications as ordered by oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular route
  • Perform fingerstick blood glucose checks
  • Obtain urine samples and perform tests ordered by provider
  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs)
  • Process lab specimens for courier pick up
  • Perform CLIA-waived in-house lab tests (rapid strep, rapid mono, influenza, urine, pregnancy, and glucometer blood glucose tests)
  • Administer vaccines and PPD skin tests as ordered
  • Clean and restock clinical areas
  • Order supplies and medications for all campuses, while maintaining PAR levels
  • Monitor inventory and expiration dates of supplies
  • Provide general information to patients, visitors, staff and physicians
  • Handle and/or resolve patient dissatisfaction or concerns
  • Maintain clinical records and forms; scan documents into EMR; enter immunizations into EMR; serve as Key person for staff for Point N Click and EMR program issues
  • Perform basic administrative, clerical, and technical supportive tasks: schedule patients for all three campuses for Health Services; manage the schedule; update demographics; monitor compliance forms; collect student health fees; confirm health insurance; open/close procedures; time management; multi-task with attention to detail; maintain inventory of clinic supplies; front desk support; cashier duties; account/record keeping; monitor outstanding balances
  • Provide cross-coverage for CAPS and SHS administrative assistant as needed
  • Participate in Health and Wellness outreach activities; support immunization compliance program
  • Perform other duties including participation on campus committees, as assigned

What We're Looking For

  • High School Diploma or GED; Medical Assistant Certification; Certification/licensure for Phlebotomy Technician or completed within six months of start date
  • Graduate of approved program meeting state requirements to perform venipuncture, injections and skin tests
  • Two years' experience in a medical office or hospital setting with clinical skills
  • Current BLS/AED for professional rescuers and healthcare providers
  • Excellent customer and communication skills; ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism and compassion
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices

Nice to Have

  • Proficiency in medical billing and insurance claims
  • Solid computer skills and proficiency with medical billing systems
  • Knowledge of all State and Federal confidentiality regulations
  • Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations with professionalism and calm
  • Positive attitude and ability to work with diverse populations; commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds and cultures; demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in work
