Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role This position encompasses all areas of mechanical design engineering—including structural design, component design, mechanisms, and tooling. You will work with the Program Manager and Engineering departments to complete designs, developing from direction provided by Novi program management and external Lear engineers.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, the manufacturing team, and customers to develop systems and complete projects.
  • Provide machine, mechanism, and tooling design along with drawing creation under minimal technical supervision.
  • Prepare drawing packages for manufacture and assembly, ensuring they are complete and accurate, meeting customer requirements as well as proper drafting standards.
  • Collaborate with shop members prior to and during the build.
  • Deliberate with Controls engineers to design for integration and select pneumatic components.
  • Develop mechanical designs to solve production plant issues.
  • Use SolidWorks to develop equipment, machine, mechanism, or tooling designs that meet customer specifications and the company quote.
  • Apply standards, processes, and best practices to complete duties.
  • Develop predictive maintenance indicators to increase reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Support legacy mechanical designs.
  • Share design methodologies, productivity tools, standards, processes, and legacy information for increased knowledge and experience within the company.
  • Mentor less experienced design staff and assist in the development of concepts and design methodologies for projects.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: At least three years’ experience in a design role at an automation/machine build shop.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, fabrication processes, and techniques for maximizing fabrication efficiency.
  • Experience in drawing creation for assemblies and details including all dimensions, tolerances, and documentation to allow manufacture and assembly of designs that meet requirements.
  • Motivated to initiate and implement tasks, strategies, and techniques in a goal-oriented manner to increase productivity and profitability.
  • Technically creative with an understanding of mechanical functions to provide robust and economical solutions.
  • Capable of evaluating quotations, specifications, and documentation to discern functional requirements, identify missing information, and define tasks for mechanical designs.
  • Organized and flexible in work functions allowing for multitasking and handling interrupted duties.
  • Analytical and decisive to define, evaluate and solve problems in an organized process.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with competency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to collaborate in team environments while maintaining individual duties effectively; communicate across cross-functional groups; communicate with suppliers to aid in design decisions.
  • Committed to integrity, ethical, and economical practices.
  • Ability to travel 20% to customer sites to capture design information or assist installation.
  • Legal authorization to work in the country where the position is located.
