Mechanic

About the Role

The Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, and performs overhaul and major/minor repairs on Franklin County vehicles and highway maintenance equipment. This role conducts brake and hydraulic repairs, routine servicing, preventative maintenance inspections, and correction of deficiencies to keep fleet assets operating safely and efficiently.

What You'll Do

• Operate a variety of tools and equipment to maintain and repair vehicles and heavy equipment, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with county guidelines.
• Road test vehicles after repair work is completed to verify proper operation.
• Assist with maintenance of systems and records, including files, lists, logs, and other recordkeeping using computerized and manual systems for proper evaluation and documentation.
• Pursue self-development and continuing professional development through educational workshops and professional publications, and establish personal networks.
• Establish and maintain communication with peers, representatives from other agencies, vendors, public officials, and the general public using courtesy and good judgment.
• Follow safety procedures and work in a shop environment near moving parts, fumes, grease, vibration, and other hazards; occasionally work outside in varying weather conditions.

What We're Looking For

Experience

• High School Diploma or GED; two years coursework in vehicle and/or heavy equipment mechanical maintenance or repair; three years of progressively responsible experience, or any combination.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: general knowledge of Franklin County policies, procedures, and applicable laws/regulations; proficiency in vehicle/mechanical maintenance; troubleshooting, problem-solving, and ability to analyze problems and implement solutions; strong time management and organizational skills; computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn and use county resource planning and Public Works software; effective communication and collaboration with staff and external parties; ability to prioritize multiple assignments and remain calm during emergencies.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid First Aid and CPR card or ability to obtain within six months; Valid driver's license with CDL Class A with Tank Vehicle Endorsement.

• Background check and eligibility for County liability insurance; ability to perform physically demanding work; willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed for seasonal demands or emergencies.
