The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It brings young African leaders to the United States for academic coursework, leadership training, networking, and community engagement. The fellowship aims to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Africa, foster leadership development, and empower young African professionals to drive innovation and positive change in their home countries. Participants engage in intensive programs at various U.S. host institutions, focusing on areas such as business, civic engagement, and public management.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027, hosted by the U.S. Department of State, offers a prestigious opportunity for young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa. This 6-week leadership institute, held in the United States, is designed to empower emerging African leaders with advanced skills, knowledge, and networks. Participants will engage in rigorous academic coursework and leadership training, fostering their capacity to drive positive change in their communities and countries. Eligibility requires candidates to be citizens and residents of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country, between 25 and 35 years old, with exceptional applicants aged 21-24 also considered. Proficiency in English and eligibility for a U.S. J-1 visa are mandatory.

Qualifications

• Must be between 25 and 35 years old (exceptional applicants aged 21-24 may be considered)

• Must not be a US citizen or permanent resident

• Must be eligible for a US J-1 visa

• Must not be an employee or immediate family member of a US Government employee

• Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English

• Must be a citizen and resident of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country (including Nigeria), permanently residing there as of 1 February 2027 and at Fellowship start in June 2027

• Must not be a prior Mandela Washington Fellowship alumnus
