About this role

New Hampshire Public Radio is seeking a managing editor to oversee our flagship daily news magazines, Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and help guide the evolution of the magazines to serve our multiplatform audience strategy. The role is full-time, exempt, onsite in Concord, New Hampshire (2 Pillsbury Street), reporting to the News Director. The budgeted salary range is $89,300 to $99,000, with consideration given to internal equity and other factors.

A one-paragraph overview The managing editor leads editorial strategy and production for NHPR’s morning and afternoon weekday news magazines, guiding ambitious, engaging broadcast journalism from pitch through final draft. The ideal candidate has a strong vision for redefining local audio journalism, inspiring collaboration across teams, and developing talent through hiring and mentorship. This position manages a four-person team and plays a key role in newsroom leadership and talent development.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all editorial aspects of NHPR's morning and afternoon weekday news magazines.
  • Lead and manage a team of hosts, producers, interns, and fellows, including training, goal setting, performance management, mentorship, and editorial guidance.
  • Serve as lead editor on stories, interviews, and other broadcast segments from pitch to final draft.
  • Ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of audio to multiple platforms.
  • Manage live and remote broadcasts, including election night events, live debates, forums, and other special programming.
  • Lead newsroom administrative tasks such as hiring, onboarding, and scheduling.
  • Oversee and collaborate on special projects and series as appropriate.
  • Participate in and lead group pitch meetings, storyboards, and edits.
  • Work with digital and audience teams to translate audio into engaging digital and social stories.
  • Partner with the News Director to improve workflows, professional development, and other operational leadership tasks in the newsroom.
  • Participate in station fundraising activities as needed.

Requirements

  • Seven to ten years of experience in audio journalism, including reporting, producing, and/or editing for broadcast.
  • Three to five years of experience leading and managing a team and inspiring others to produce their best work.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to train less experienced staff and challenge more experienced staff to grow.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience.
  • Willingness to work onsite in Concord, New Hampshire, and collaborate across teams to support NHPR’s multiplatform strategy.
