Job Summary

As the Manager of Practice Programs with the Public Health Practice & Global Engagement (PHPGE) team at Michigan Public Health, you will provide hands-on operational leadership for a portfolio of experiential learning programs that prepare students for public health careers and fulfill students' degree requirements. Your primary responsibilities will include leading the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST), managing the day-to-day activities of Academic Health Department partnerships, and supporting the planning and on-site delivery of the Public Health in Action courses.

Reporting to the Director of the PHPGE team, you will exercise independent judgment in managing operational priorities, addressing program and partnership challenges, and recommending improvements.

This position is based in Ann Arbor and may be eligible for a hybrid schedule that requires, typically three days per week on-site, with occasional evenings and weekends. Travel is required periodically to support student field experiences, as well as to attend conferences and meetings with partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on leadership for a portfolio of experiential learning programs, including the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST), Academic Health Department partnerships, applied practice experiences, and community-engaged projects.
• Manage programs from planning through implementation and assessment, establishing operational priorities, schedules, procedures, and workflows and performing the administrative coordination necessary for successful delivery.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of Academic Health Department partnerships and coordinate student placements, service projects, workshops, training sessions, and related community-engaged activities.
• Support the planning and on-site delivery of Public Health in Action courses, including developing community-based projects; communicating with students and partners; coordinating project activities and logistics; and arranging domestic and international travel.
• Develop and implement strategies to expand practice-based learning opportunities for undergraduate, residential graduate, and online students.
• Manage student application, recruitment, selection, onboarding, placement, and preparation processes.
• Mentor student project teams and develop training in project planning, program evaluation, data stewardship, professional communication, teamwork, cultural humility, and community engagement.
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees, and provide program leadership and student guidance during field experiences.
• Cultivate partnerships with state and local health departments, community organizations, public health agencies, and other practice partners; assess partner priorities and project readiness; and connect identified needs with appropriate students, faculty, programs, and university resources.
• Collaborate with partners, students, faculty, and U-M units to establish project scope, deliverables, timelines, responsibilities, and resource needs and manage projects through completion.
• Assess program progress and outcomes, analyze program data, prepare reports, support accreditation activities, and recommend improvements and opportunities for expansion.
• Travel domestically and internationally approximately two to three times per year for student field experiences lasting about one week each, with additional travel to conferences and partner meetings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in public health, education, social science, public policy, social work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in program management, experiential learning, community engagement, public health practice, program implementation or evaluation, or a related area.

• Experience independently managing complex projects and timelines across multiple departments and/or community organizations.

• Experience developing program evaluation plans and tools to make informed decisions and improve programs.

• Experience cultivating and maintaining program partnerships.

• Experience with student-learning assessment, data stewardship, accessibility, travel planning, and risk-management practices.

• Familiarity with academic requirements or accreditation expectations related to applied public health practice.
