Requirements

• High school diploma or GED

• 1–3 months related experience or training

• California driver's license with good record, and California Water Distribution Grade 1 certificate within 18 months of hire

• Minimum Qualifications

• Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.

• Fill out work orders and daily forms and be able to communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, vendors, contractors, and purveyors.

• Knowledge of safety requirements for working in and around heavy equipment, power equipment, construction sites, high voltages, paint, and in confined spaces.

• Apply a common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and be able to solve day-to-day problems that may occur in stressful environments.

• Ability to work with supervision and respond appropriately to direction, feedback, evaluation, and coaching.

• Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.

• Observe proper safety precautions.

• Education and Experience

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

• One to three months of related experience and/or training.

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Should have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

• EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

• Must be able to operate District light and medium duty trucks, forklifts, compressors, jackhammers, a wide range of hand and power tools, and other equipment common to a water system. Must also be able to use radio and telephones to communicate.

• Must be able to operate a vehicle to travel to other District facilities for maintenance, inspection, and testing. Competently use computers, office equipment, and other devices. Must have general knowledge of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Sitting, standing, bending, walking often on uneven terrain in an outdoor environment is required as well as walking and crawling through pipelines while inspecting construction projects.

• Manual dexterity and use of hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and talking, hearing, and smelling are all necessary.

• Climbing or balancing is often required.

• The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• The employee is regularly required to wear employer-provided personal protective equipment. Must be capable of wearing respiratory equipment to include half, full face, and supplied air systems.
