Job title: Maintenance Mechanics
Job Summary
Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide variety of equipment and machinery across University of Utah facilities. Uses hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve issues in mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems. Ensures proper wiring, installation, and repair work comply with applicable codes and regulatory requirements.
Conducts inspections, testing, and preventative maintenance to identify hazards and ensure safe, reliable operation of equipment. Documents work performed. Responsibilities increase in complexity, independence, and technical expertise across levels, with higher levels providing advanced diagnostics and mentorship.
This position may be filled as either an Maintenance Mechanic II or Maintenance Mechanic III, depending on the qualifications, experience, and departmental need.
Maintenance Mechanic II performs maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting activities with moderate supervision, handling a broader range of equipment issues and assignments with growing independence.
Maintenance Mechanic III performs skilled maintenance and complex troubleshooting with limited supervision and may provide guidance and technical assistance to less-experienced team members.
Responsibilities

Responds to trouble calls from building occupants and computer alarms.

Monitor building automation systems (BAS) and respond to system alerts and failures.

Reviews alarm summaries and makes building system adjustments on the Building Automation Systems.

Documents daily building system problems.

Utilize work management system software to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on building HVAC equipment such as chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, VAV boxes, fan coil units, and air handler units.

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on building electrical systems such as motors, VFDs, ATS, lighting, controls, and generators.

Use diagnostic tools and software to identify and resolve system inefficiencies.

Actively step up and provide suggestions and recommendations on repairing or replacing aging equipment and assets.

Assist in the installation and commissioning of new mechanical systems and equipment.

Coordinate with contractors and vendors during construction or renovation projects.

Fosters an environment of teamwork and growth within the department.

Work collaboratively with individuals internal and external to the department.

Adhere to OSHA, state, and University safety protocols in all maintenance activities.

Participate in ongoing training and certification programs.

This position is considered ‘critical staff’ and is expected to participate in emergency management

This position will participate in a 24/7 on call rotation, and is responsible for both employee’s safety and facilities day and night when assigned on-call duty.

Minimum Qualifications
-
LEVEL III – Skilled: High School Diploma or equivalent, 3+ years of related experience. Strong troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic systems. Ability to read blueprints and technical documents. Works independently. May guide junior staff.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Maintenance Mechanic II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

Maintenance Mechanic III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.

Preferences

Technical or vocational training in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or related field

Experience with building systems (HVAC, electrical distribution, boilers, controls, etc.)

Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)

Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS)

Relevant certifications (e.g., HVAC, electrical, EPA, etc.)
