Job title: Maintenance Mechanic
Job Summary
Performs maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, and inspection of a wide variety of equipment, machinery, and building systems. Uses hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. Ensures equipment and systems are installed, maintained, and repaired in compliance with applicable safety standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
Conducts inspections, testing, preventive maintenance, and hazard assessments to promote safe and reliable operations. Maintains accurate documentation of work performed and inspection results. As employees progress through the career track, they assume increasing levels of technical complexity, independence, problem-solving responsibility, and leadership, including providing guidance and mentorship to less-experienced team members.
This position may be filled at the Maintenance Mechanic I, II, III, level based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies, as well as departmental needs.
Responsibilities

Maintenance Mechanic I: Performs routine maintenance and repair tasks under close supervision while developing technical skills and knowledge of equipment, machinery, and building systems.

Maintenance Mechanic II: Performs maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting activities with moderate supervision, handling a broader range of equipment issues and assignments with growing independence.

Maintenance Mechanic III: Performs skilled maintenance and complex troubleshooting with limited supervision and may provide guidance and technical assistance to less-experienced team members.

This position may be filled at the Maintenance Mechanic I, II, III, or IV level based on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies, as well as departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications
-
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Maintenance Mechanic, I: Requires little to no related experience.

Maintenance Mechanic, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

Maintenance Mechanic, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.

Preferences
-
Technical or vocational training in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or related field

Experience with building systems (HVAC, electrical distribution, boilers, controls, etc.)

Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)

Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS)

Relevant certifications (e.g., HVAC, electrical, EPA, etc.)
