About this role
Job title: Machinist II
About the Role The primary purpose of this position is machining and fabricating tooling, parts, assemblies, guarding, and jigs/fixtures for production equipment supporting Corning's sustainable solutions. You will make, modify, and repair manufacturing components and collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Facilities to drive safety, quality, schedule, and cost improvements.
What You'll Do
- Sets up and operates machine tools such as manual lathes, mills, surface grinder, heat treat oven, welder, sheet metal shear and brake to machine or fabricate parts, using hand tools as needed to fit and assemble parts.
- Machines, alters, and repairs components from blueprints, old/worn/broken parts, models, hand sketches, or verbal descriptions; occasionally advises design improvements to achieve desired benefits.
- Determines machining sequence to complete tasks in a timely manner and meet tolerance requirements with available equipment; completes tasks with minimal supervision.
- Computes dimension measurements using hand calculations, calculator, or CAD programs to determine assembly methods and sequences; able to compute simple math and geometry/trigonometry formulas.
- Able to machine and fabricate using FDA-compliant materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, and acetal.
- Lays out components with standard practices including measuring, marking, and scribing materials for machining; requests material as needed.
- Verifies dimensions, clearances, and alignment using dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers to ensure precise fits.
- Collaborates with setup and manufacturing engineers/technicians to troubleshoot root causes, outline sustainable repair paths, and make critical repairs to release equipment back to operation.
- Performs predictive/preventive maintenance.
What We're Looking For
- Experience setting up and operating machine tools (manual lathes, mills, surface grinder, heat treat oven, welder, sheet metal shear and brake) and fabricating parts.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, models, hand sketches, and verbal descriptions; willingness to advise design improvements.
- Strong math and geometry skills, and familiarity with CAD tools.
- Experience with FDA-compliant materials (stainless steel, aluminum, acetal) and production environments.
- Proficiency in using measurement instruments (dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, micrometers) to verify tolerances.
- Ability to collaborate with engineers and technicians to troubleshoot issues and perform sustainable repairs.
- Knowledge of or ability to perform predictive/preventive maintenance.
