Local Representative

About the Role The NewsGuild of New York seeks an experienced, New York City-based Local Representative with organizing and bargaining skills to lead contract campaigns and bargaining tables and to advocate for media workers in a rapidly changing industry. Local Representatives are expected to be strong bargainers, trainers, advocates, and organizers, negotiating contracts while addressing member issues and grievances through organizing and collective solutions, and preparing for arbitration when needed. They also help members build leadership structures and organize around negotiations.

What You'll Do

• Lead contract campaigns and bargaining tables, representing members across print, digital, video, and photo journalism and related staff in New York City's media landscape.
• Negotiate contracts, address member issues and grievances through organizing and collective action, and prepare for arbitration when negotiations reach impasse.
• Assist members in building leadership structures and organizing around negotiations; build internal leadership networks and prepare for strike consideration when appropriate.
• Collaborate with a motivated staff and manage your own time as a self-starter.

What We're Looking For

• Minimum of 5 years experience with contract bargaining and organizing, especially first contracts, campaigns, and grievance handling.
• Experience building to and executing a strike; building strong internal leadership structures and member networks.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and strategic planning skills; excellent written and verbal communication with the ability to write clearly for media workers.
• Experience with basic labor law; understanding of rapidly shifting media landscape including social media and new media tech.
• Demonstrated judgment and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a highly-motivated staff and be a self-starter; ability to manage your own time.
• Knowledge of the news business and journalism is a valuable plus.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range is $107,000 – $136,000, commensurate with experience.
