Job Purpose
- The Loan Recovery Officer is responsible for recovering delinquent and non-performing loans, minimizing portfolio-at-risk (PAR) and credit losses, and protecting the Company's asset quality.
- The role ensures timely collection follow-up, effective borrower engagement and restructuring, enforcement of collateral and security where necessary, and adherence to regulatory, legal, and ethical standards for debt recovery.
Duties and Responsibilities
Loan Monitoring & Early Delinquency Management:
- Monitor the loan portfolio daily to identify accounts that are due, overdue, or showing early signs of default.
- Contact borrowers through calls, SMS, emails, and visits to issue payment reminders and secure repayment commitments before accounts become non-performing.
- Maintain accurate aging analysis and delinquency tracking in line with internal credit policy and CBN prudential guidelines.
Collections & Recovery Operations:
- Execute structured collection strategies on delinquent and non-performing loans to maximize recoveries and reduce portfolio-at-risk (PAR).
- Negotiate repayment plans, loan restructuring, rescheduling, and settlement arrangements within approved authority limits.
- Coordinate the realization of collateral and enforcement of guarantees, working with Legal Counsel and approved recovery agents where necessary.
- Refer accounts to external solicitors or recovery agents when internal efforts are exhausted and supervise their performance.
Account Review, Provisioning & Reporting:
- Document all recovery actions, borrower communications, and promises-to-pay in the loan management system.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly recovery reports, including collection rates, recovery trends, and PAR analysis, for management and the Credit Committee.
- Support Finance with loan classification, impairment provisioning, and write-off recommendations in line with IFRS 9 and regulatory requirements.
Compliance, Ethics & Risk Management:
- Ensure all recovery activities comply with CBN regulations, consumer protection rules, data privacy requirements (NDPA), and the Company's code of conduct.
- Conduct recoveries professionally and ethically, without harassment, intimidation, or unlawful disclosure of borrower information.
- Identify root causes of default and recommend improvements to credit underwriting, monitoring, and recovery processes.
Requirements
General Education:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Economics, Business Administration, Law, or a related discipline.
Professional Qualification:
- Professional certification (e.g., ACA/ICAN, ACCA, CIBN, Chartered Institute of Credit Management) is an added advantage.
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in loan recovery, collections, or credit risk management within a bank, microfinance bank, or non-bank financial institution.
- In-depth understanding of loan recovery strategies, collateral realization, loan restructuring, and CBN prudential guidelines on asset classification and provisioning.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian debt recovery laws, consumer protection regulations, and credit bureau reporting.
Key Competencies:
- Strong negotiation, persuasion, and conflict-resolution skills in dealing with delinquent borrowers.
- Sound credit analysis and ability to assess repayment capacity and restructure distressed loans.
- Meticulous attention to detail in loan documentation, aging analysis, and recovery reporting.
- Uncompromising integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in handling borrower accounts and sensitive information.
