Paralegal

A San Francisco-based nonprofit legal organization is seeking a Litigation Paralegal to provide day-to-day litigation and legal administrative support on a contract basis. The position focuses on preparing discovery responses, handling state and federal electronic court filings, and supporting civil litigation matters, primarily involving unlawful detainer (eviction) proceedings and housing-related disputes.

This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on civil litigation paralegal who is comfortable balancing substantive litigation responsibilities with traditional legal secretarial and administrative duties in a collaborative nonprofit environment where flexibility and attention to detail are essential.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and assist with written discovery responses, including interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission.

• Gather client information, organize responsive documents, and assist with subpoenas and document production.

• Prepare, format, and electronically file pleadings, motions, and other litigation documents in California state and federal courts.

• Assist with drafting pleadings, answers, demurrers, and other legal documents using established templates and attorney direction.

• Maintain case files, manage litigation calendaring, track court deadlines, and coordinate hearings, depositions, and meetings.

• Provide legal secretarial and administrative support, including document preparation, correspondence, client communication, occasional intake and phone coverage, and office-related errands.

• 1+ years of experience supporting civil litigation matters as a paralegal, legal assistant, legal secretary, or in a comparable litigation support role.

• Hands-on experience preparing and responding to written discovery.

• Proficiency with electronic court filing in both California state and federal courts.

• Familiarity with litigation procedures, pleadings, discovery, and calendaring.

• Comfortable performing both substantive paralegal work and legal secretarial/administrative responsibilities.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe, and electronic filing platforms.

• Unlawful detainer, housing litigation, or nonprofit legal services experience is a plus.

• Ability to work onsite five days per week in San Francisco and handle occasional local errands as needed.
