About this role
About the Role Catholic Migration Services’ Employment Unit provides free legal advice and representation to low-wage workers on a range of workplace rights issues, including unpaid wages, minimum wage and overtime, job termination, discrimination and harassment, sick and family leave, unemployment insurance, and unsafe working conditions. The unit assists workers in learning and enforcing their rights and, when needed, represents clients in state and federal courts, as well as in government investigations. What You'll Do
- Provide free legal advice and representation to low-wage workers on workplace rights
- Represent workers in state and federal courts and before government agencies such as the New York State Department of Labor, New York State Division of Human Rights, New York City Commission on Human Rights, New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Board, and other agencies
- Help workers resolve disputes without formal proceedings when possible; when necessary, handle formal court and agency proceedings
- Conduct Know Your Rights presentations and partner with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, religious organizations, and elected officials to educate workers; presentations can be conducted in-person or virtually What We're Looking For
