About the Role

The Legal Clerk provides highly technical clerical support for case processing in the County District Court. This role supports judicial staff and the public by handling intricate data entry, document preparation, scheduling, and courtroom operations with attention to accuracy and confidentiality.

What You'll Do

  • Respond to multi-line telephone and counter inquiries; sort and route documents; respond to or initiate correspondence related to the department.
  • Analyze and accurately enter complex, technical data into computer applications; update, retrieve, and process case data promptly.
  • Prepare documents for scanning; verify information; index and ensure electronic retrieval; maintain confidential records.
  • Receive and receipting payments (fines, bail, penalties, fees); process, monitor, and report on receipts; manage large sums as required.
  • Arrange time payments for fines; monitor delinquent payments per court policy.
  • Process commitments, releases, and referrals; contact agencies as needed.
  • Monitor case dispositions for compliance with court orders; prepare notices and documents for court review and signature.
  • Issue and process bench warrants and subpoenas; prepare daily/weekly court calendars for criminal, traffic, civil, and small claims; schedule hearings.
  • Examine legal documents for adherence to law or court procedures; post, file, or route documents; prepare cases.
  • Schedule non-jury and jury trials; coordinate hearings; procure jurors or interpreters as necessary.
  • Operate courtroom recording equipment and maintain transcripts and logs; assist judges by providing needed information from witnesses, attorneys, and litigants.
  • Maintain accurate docket entries and other court records; issue orders for commitments, warrants, subpoenas, summonses, and related documents.
  • Explain procedures or forms to parties and provide routine information about court business.
  • Perform other office duties as required by RCW, court rules, and supervisor directions.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: High school diploma or GED, and at least two years of progressively responsible experience in a court or legal setting, or any combination that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.
  • Skills: Ability to operate standard office equipment; proficient computer use with 45 words per minute net typing; knowledge of general office procedures; strong knowledge of office practices and legal terminology; ability to work under pressure; sound decision-making; effective written and oral communication; ability to interact with co-workers, public officials, and the public.
  • Language: Ability to read and interpret court orders, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $4,467.84 - $5,836.91 monthly (PW07 steps 2-8), depending on steps; health insurance includes Medical, Dental; county contributions to a personal health savings account; state retirement system; deferred compensation program available; up to 11 paid holidays and floating holidays per collective bargaining agreement; accrued vacation and sick leave.
