Job title: Lead System-Level Hardware Architect
About the Role Formlabs seeks a Lead System-Level Hardware Architect to own the hardware architecture, design, and development for its 3D printers and post-processing devices. You will drive core component selection (motion control, heating, sensors, embedded systems), and manage the full hardware lifecycle from prototyping and testing to DFM and cost optimization, ensuring performance, reliability, and safety across products. You will lead and grow the hardware engineering team, and collaborate closely with firmware, software, and manufacturing.
What You'll Do
- Lead the system-level hardware architecture, design, and development for Formlabs' 3D printers and post-processing devices.
- Drive selection and integration of core components: motion control, heating, sensors, and embedded systems.
- Own the full hardware development cycle: prototyping, testing, validation, DFM, and cost optimization.
- Ensure hardware meets performance, reliability, safety, and compliance standards.
- Manage hardware development timeline and collaborate with firmware, software, and manufacturing teams.
- Build, mentor, and manage the hardware engineering team.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's/Master's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on hardware development experience, including 2+ years in a technical lead or management role.
- Proven track record of delivering complex electromechanical products to mass production.
- Experience with 3D printers, CNC, or robotics is a strong plus.
- Strong expertise in areas such as motion control, thermal design, or embedded hardware.
- Proficient in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) and knowledgeable in manufacturing processes.
- Excellent leadership and project management skills.
- Good communication skills in English is preferred.

- Experience with 3D printers, CNC, or robotics is a strong plus.
