Job title: Lead Software Engineer – Python/React
About the Role
Lead Product Engineer with a heavy backend focus (roughly 70% backend / 30% frontend) to build AI-driven accounting workflows. You will design and ship production-grade backend services and APIs powering generative AI capabilities, while contributing across the full stack to rapidly iterate on features, drive user engagement, and optimize outcomes through data-driven experimentation. This role is part of Thomson Reuters’ Materia AI team, formed from the recent acquisition, blending startup agility with global scale.
What You'll Do
- Lead backend-driven full-stack initiatives — from Python-based AI services and APIs to the React interfaces that bring them to life.
- Design, implement, and ship production-grade backend services and APIs powering AI-driven accounting workflows.
- Architect scalable distributed systems; translate complex requirements into robust, production-ready solutions; own features from 0→1 and deliver in production.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and AI specialists to deliver elegant, high-performance features and translate requirements into robust solutions.
- Drive data-driven experimentation to optimize outcomes and user engagement; ensure reliability and observability in production.
What We're Looking For
- 70% backend / 30% frontend; backend-first engineers who can contribute across the stack, not frontend-heavy.
- Hands-on ownership shipping real products end-to-end (0→1).
- Strong Python backend depth with FastAPI, Django, APIs, and microservices.
- Experience building scalable distributed systems.
- React/TypeScript capability to support full-stack delivery; frontend experience required but not frontend-heavy.
- Startup or greenfield experience; ability to independently design, build, and deliver systems in production.
- Customer-facing feature ownership and collaboration with product teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience building AI-driven software and Generative AI capabilities.
- Domain experience in accounting workflows or financial software.
- Experience working on hybrid teams or with acquisitions like Materia to accelerate product development.
